Hi, I'm new to Filter Forge and would like to understand it's legal use. I've read the terms of use:
http://www.filterforge.com/termsofuse.html but this is rather confusing to me. I want to be respectful of copyrights of course. If I use FF filters to stylize 3d renders I do can I sell those? |

Yes you can. It is considered polite to mention the filter authors somewhere in the comments to your renders, but you are not obliged to do that.

And what happens when someone that is NOT the author of the filter takes it and and use the results from that filter to SELL them on internet stores as plain texture files and as if it was HIS OWN works and if this have been done by himself or herself?
I mean taking directly the result whithout any modifification, and even without changing the settings, rendering it and selling it. And of course without any credit or mention to the original author, and neither how this has been done and what software has been used. |

@SpaceRay - that is something I've learned to live with. Seen to many times posting direct renders from my filters and explaning how they painted that texture in Photoshop
![]() What pisses me off is people taking renders off different sites like DeviantArt (screenshots) selling them as wallpapers. - I never expected the Spanish inquisition |

SpaceRay, as with any artist, we have to be aware that there are consequences to giving away the source material of anything especially something that generates the work for you. One of those consequences is the one you've mentioned. You just can't avoid people from doing that. We do wish every person who comes across a filter or any form of software that produces "a work of art" uses them in a fair manner, giving the author their much desired credit. However, everybody's on a different page. As an author, I can only beg for users to be fair with what I produce.
I rarely upload generators because it is capable of reproducing my work. So when I do upload something that's a generator, I typically make it for the public to enjoy, hence I mind less about derivative works and care more about what good comes out of publishing the methodology. But I do upload effect filters more often because it requires a user-input. This means that the end-result cannot be fully achieved without the user feeding their own imagery. It's quite a challenge to sell the effect as stock material because it can only be part of a process. This basically means as an author, you should least be mindful that such acts exist and cannot be avoided. That when you create a generator available publicly, there are undesirable consequences, and that you really can't do too much about it. ![]() And as a person who uses it, should feel free to creatively generate and use the filter to their liking, and also should consider that authors are producing the generators and effects available out of our good faith and assumption that most people don't intend malicious means. |
