Alright aside from me writing pretty hardcore stuff (haha ... yeah about that...) I'm also willing to produce some video / written tutorials for FilterForge. Maybe on the basics? Or should we start with something specific?
Your call! ![]() |

Define "Basics".
I myself would love to see videos explaining some of the tricks used by the pros. For example, you have bomber tricks you use for your art. Also, I would love to know the "Why does it do that" of some things. For example, snippets that spherize\unspherize. I don't want a three-thousand essay on the mathematics behind it, just some examples on how it works, what it's useful for, stuff like hat. And I thank you in adavnce, for anything you will post! ![]() |

"Spherize" translates an image to Polar Coordinates (assuming image started in Cartesian coordinates) "Unspherize" translates an image to Cartesian Coordinates (assuming image started in Polar coordinates) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_coordinates It's a pretty simple concept but I agree that the explanations contain way too much math. |

OH!! This would be very interesting and useful to have more tutorials about Filter Forge, and specially coming from an expert and skilled person like you that like much to make simple, optimized and efficient well done filters.
I think that the best way would be in the same style as CFandM has done his own tutorials on shapes that shows in a simply and clear way how to use them.
YES, this could be a good thing, to know the tricks that you have discovered to use the components better, like for example how to use the bomber in the best way, and what things could be attached to the bomber that we do not know that could work well. If you make this tutorials it would be very appreciated and thankful Thanks very much for thinking on sharing your knowledge |

How about a visual breakdown of what each component does; with multiple example snippets available for download.
For example with the Free Gradient it's not obvious that you can make a perfect angular gradient. |

There may also have tutorials demonstrating how to use the components in place of controls. Which gives amazing results.
The following examples give a very small idea of what I try to explain. If, for example, using a gradient at "mortar width" instead of a simple slider control, it is surprising to see what happens. In further exploring, you change the rotate of the gradient and you get there as an unexpected result that inspires a later work. We continue further exploration in the gradient just by moving to another input, you try them all one by one and you can see the results. This happens also with other components that gradients. For example, I have two kaleidoscope components in my image, and I put with my input gradient somewhere, I try with all modes of the kaleidoscope. Again the results are amazing. That was my tip of the day which is what it is worth. It would be interesting to have lots of tricks here. If the authors of filters would give their own tips on the forum (with images for being able to see results), it would surely be appreciated by the community. Is there someone to open a new thread with as title "Tips and tricks with images" ? ![]() visit https://gisoft.ca |

Thanks, Skybase, fo rhe first tutorial. It's really easy to follow, and you give alot of info on how to use the editor.
Gigi, those are exactly the tips I was talking about. I look in some of the filters and see so many cool techniques, the problem is, I don't always know how to use them in my own filters. |

It is not necessary to use them in your existing filters. This could serve as a basis for starting a new filter, or even use it as inspiration. If I want to create a flower, I manage to create a flower. But often I have nothing particular to set up and I began by testing with the components, the inputs and outputs, and it inspires me. I find the research interesting and constructive. This is one of my ways to experiment and discover a multitude of things. So I think creating a thread in that direction. But I do not know if this would be appreciated. I am not obliged to take time and put my energy in this help that I could bring. But if I decide to do that, it will for help, share my experiences for those to whom it might be useful. visit https://gisoft.ca |

Gigi, I didn't mean that I need to add these trick to my existing filters, I mean I don't know how to incorporate them when I make a new filter.
Let's say I'm trying to make a filter that takes an image, rotates it in many angles and blends all the rotations togather. That's kinda easy to do. But suppose I want the rotations to be random. I don't know how to do that. That's why I need to have someone like uberzev tell me "Oh, that's easy. Take a perlin noise, connect it to checkers, then... never mind, here's a snippet" ![]() Also, I would love to have a thread with cool tips like the ones you put above. That would be awsome. A thread with images that show all kinds of unusual ways to use a component would be a great asset to the comunity. |

Gigi, I think it's great.
Your images above with the examples can save others alot of time and give alot of ideas for filters. It would be great to see more of your insight into filter making tricks. I haven't had time to really look how you did all the latest spirograms, for example, but I'm confident I will find many interesting techniques you used there. I vote keep making the mini-tuts. |

New "tutorial" or more like showing off: https://vimeo.com/45949013
Shows how http://www.filterforge.com/filters/10333.html <--- this texture was generated. The video is just a walk through but I tried to cover some of the key elements of how to add that detail in there. In this case, gunk, depth, and the sense of scale. |
