So you'll have the beta-testers focus on a specific set of features in each beta round, and each new round will have additional features 'unlocked' for testing?
My guess (with a little wishful thinking mixed in) is that we'll see the first beta round sometime in october, and that each round will last for about a month or so, depending on the severity of the bugs and the influx of bug reports. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Yes -- and a bit more. Beta 2.0 will be sloppier than our previous beta for v 1.0 (which was basically a release-quality product), and the new features will not be super-polished. So when we release each beta round, I'll publish a list of related "open problems" and ask the community to help us solve them. Mostly, these open problems will be related to productization and UI. P.S. I'd prefer the term "included" rather than "unlocked" -- the latter implies that the features are ready but not available via the user interface, which is not the case. If a feature is not in beta, it means that it's not yet developed enough to be publicly released.
I expect that bugs won't be a problem. Most problems will be UI-related, i.e. "How can we make feature X usable and newbie-friendly?" |

The UI always struck me as functional yet very rigid (read: non-configurable). Now, I'm blissfully unencumbered when it comes to programming and GUI design, so please pardon my uninformed ramblings, but it always appeared to me that the original approach to designing the UI was to have it pretty much 'hard-coded' and 'nailed-down-exactly' from the start. Obviously, there is no need for a very specialized application like FF to go for a completely open and redesigneable UI (like Luxology's modo, for example), but IMHO the overall UI handling should feel a little more 'loose' to allow users more room for refurnishing their 'filter labs'. ![]() So, my question is: In the long-term, will there be a move towards a more fluid UI that users can reshape to fit their workflows, hopefully with an infrastructure behind it that allows for incorporating user requests and new features more easily? Or will the new beta focus on distilling -- by trial and fire -- another 'hard-coded' and 'nailed-down-exactly' UI design that happens to fit exactly the needs of the expanded feature set of v2? --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

i think, dilla, that the above may be why the UI isnt a bit more flexible. vlad has always stated he wants things understandable by new folks. so, i'm guessing it's going to be a choice between being easy/intuitive to being more flexible. the point is, the more options you add, the more complex things get and the less 'newbie friendly' a thing gets... in most cases, i would think. now me, i want options! i want a tabbed GUI and a file manager and the kitchen sink and... but it has to be user-friendly ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

No matter how user-friendly FilterForge becomes, newbies will never be able to create high quality filters without first understanding basic principles like noise, offset, blending types, thresholds, etc.
So yes FilterForge should strive to be user friendly but I think if the reason is to support newbies, I say help them via better tutorials and give the weathered veterains like Crapadilla his shining liquid UI. Because frankly speaking whose filters have come to symbolize Filter Forge more, this one http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2074.html or this one http://www.filterforge.com/filters/523.html No disrespect to the creator of that last filer, but I think it shows my point. |

probably get shot down for this but maybe there should be a new category for new people experimenting with FF and if their filter goes HU or medium usage it then gets moved over to the main categories? That way new people get to have input on their filters with out the main library getting flooded?
And yes I know I created and submitted some newbie filters that I should look at sometime ![]() Just to keep on subject
I like new functions ![]() Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)

Hey, that's not a bad sounding idea. Although it would almost get separated like the gallery: Featured works and non-featured. So people experimenting wouldn't get much attention, and would make newbies less interacted with, and they would feel excluded.
So, at first I liked it, but as I typed and predicted, it seems it's one of those ideas that sounds great, but wouldn't be in the long term, or for another "grouping" of contributors. Roses are #FF0000

The UI can easily be made more flexible and yet stay intuitive and newbie-friendly. For example: One of the first things I did inside the Filter Editor was to click-drag on the dividers framing the preview window in an attempt to resize it to fit my needs. Sadly I was out of luck, and I found that everything was locked into place. So, by making the UI more 'fluid' I do not mean making everything completely undockable and free-floating. I'm just saying it should be less locked down to a single pre-planned layout that was deemed 'optimal'. People have different preferences as to what is optimal for their style of working, so a somewhat adaptable UI is a must. Furthermore, my post really wasn't meant as a feature request, but rather as a question as to which course Vlad is laying in for the future of the UI: Will we head towards a more changeable UI or towards another pre-planned 'optimal' layout updated for the additional v2 features? --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Hey, don't cry, Redcap! Because there are very good news for you - I stole the top secret draft with the list of beta-testers of V2!!! And looks like you are in the list! This draft is prepared by FF administration for the FF support team which will read it in the nearest time and then start to send the betas to those who is in the list. I had a few minutes to look at it and then I returned it back. I didn't do anything with it, just looked and returned it. Really... ![]() Here is the copy of the list... ![]() |

i'm sorry, constantin, but because FF, inc. is a russian company they are not taking any beta testers from russia (or parts nearby) due to others thinking they're showing nationalism favorites. so, you can cross your name off the list, too
