I don't think there will be any big releases anytime soon. Our main focus now is the Mac version, but it will take months (hopefully not years) to see the first results.

Yeah, I think that a Mac version will significantly increase the amount of users here.....given that Mac still has a strong hold on the graphics market....

I had a Mac once, I dunno how McD's stays in businesss serving that crap. There should be an FF ported for use on those Iputers though, you know, those over-priced no right-clicking ones. smile:D

I wonder, are you guys planning on throwing us a small update every now and then, or will there be a total 'development freeze' for the PC version for a longer period of time?

Not sure about that. Personally, a version 2.0 for PC seems so much more desireable to me than a 1.009 for OSX... smile:D

Of other cool stuff that might get into a major future version: soft shadows for surface type filters, better support for color management (this one actually might slip into 1.x, but I'm not sure enough for now), metacomponents (a tree of components represented as a single component), bomber components and a lot more

Ok, I'm gonna make a terribly PC-biased post... smile;)

Doesn't the PC version already successfully run on OSX via Parallels, or something? And doesn't the new OSX natively support windows applications? I'm kind of blissfully unencumbered when it comes to Macs, so pardon my ignorance on the matter. I had work on Macs in the distant past, but I'll admit I never got 'it'. They just kept crashing on me... smile;)

To me, the development of the native OSX version kind of takes the wind out of Filter Forge's sparkling sails quite drastically, since version 2.0 could be such a gem with all the features that are planned. Now we'll have to wait at least a year or longer for the 2.0 beta.

Bummer! smile:dgrin:

No, it doesn't. Intel-based Macs can run Windows via Bootcamp but they can't execute Mac and Windows code simultaneously within the Mac OS X environment as Bob Cringely speculated earlier.

as i understand it, bootcamp is like having a dual boot pc; you can run bootcamp or osx, but not both simultaneously.

parallels is a vm module, essentially. it runs sort of like a shell within osx but, if i remember correctly, the vm module and osx cant communicate with each other very well. so, it's sort like running linux on a pc partition. there is some transfer for info possible, but not a lot.

and, if you really pin a mac salesman down, you'll find out both methods are not perfect and some pc stuff wont run under either.

thus, a full-fledged version of FF for the mac actually does make sense, particularly in light of the fact that mac has always done sight and sound better than a pc.

Steve Jobs has recently (June, 10) claimed that there are 3 ways to run Windows code on Macs:

1) bootcamp; 2) parallels; 3) new vmware.

This new VMWare allows to run Windows code simultaneously with native Mac code.

These days, this is pure hype. The reason why software companies are supporting the Mac platform is its market share in the creative professional space:
http://theappleblog.com/2007/04/09/wh...t-the-mac/

"I asked Adobe (just before they released CS3) why it supports Mac OS X. I received a response from Russell Brady, PR Director of Adobe. According to Mr. Brady, Adobe’s sales in its last financial year (2006) “were 77% Windows and 23% Mac. In some markets, such as the creative professional space, the Macintosh percentage is even higher. The Macintosh market is huge for Adobe and, by most estimates, we’re the largest supplier of Mac software on the planet."

These days, this is pure hype.
well, not ever having owned a mac, i cant really argue this. but i do know that when i go into one of the local computer stores and do side by side comparisons, the macs just look sweeter. but, that's hardly a definitive statement of 'sight and sound is better on a mac'. having been around back in the 8 bit days, when apple, commmodore and ibm ruled the computer universe, the motorola chip and architecture (apple and commodore) was far superior than intel's, at least in sight and sound. and when the move went to 16 bit computers, macs, amigas and pcs, again, apple and commodore were so far ahead as to be laughable, at least in the sight and sound arenas. i recall seeing the pc ads in the late 80's and early 90's about 'multi-media' and 'multi-tasking' and i just had to hold my guts from splitting while laughing. we'd had these things for years already and here was little old pc finally acknowledging that these things even existed. lol.

the whole thing with the motorola architecture was that the cpu was more of a traffic manager than a number cruncher. it simply handed off tasks to the other processors, a sight processor and a sound processor and some others. it didnt try to do it all itself. pc's were more about making the cpu the one and only and making it faster and faster so that it could handle all the tasks.

now, as things evolved, the pc finally started to have to hand some of this stuff off. so, you got sound cards and video cards and the two machines evolved a bit closer together. then directx came in on the pc and we got rid of all the idiot dos fiddling that had to be done when you ran a high graphic/sound package. all the 'high mem' stuff dropped into the background and you no longer had to fiddle so much with your boot files to get a game or other application to work right. but, mac was still ahead at this point and still the superior machine as far as ease of use and multi-media, multi-tasking.

but, now mac has gone intel and the pc has cleaned up a lot of stuff and fixed a number of old 8088 leftovers, so, like i said to start with, i cant really verify that a mac is superior these days on sight and sound and maybe i am just 'buying the hype'. but, given the history and given 'the hype' (god, i love the apple commercials where 'mac' is talking to 'pc'! smile:D ), if i were truly going to go with the more creative company, i'd go mac, hands down every time.
