The problem with Digg is that it is biased towards the opinion of the hardcore diggers, the most vocal minority. |

These hypothetical 'paying customer' accounts could be linked to license IDs. That way, only one account per purchased version could be created and used for voting, and trial users would be excluded. The question then is what happens when a customer purchases more than one license. Apart from the FF team cheering in the back, would he get more votes? --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

A paying customer account contains real-world personally-identifiable info, and we will need to look up what exactly our privacy policy says about storing and using such data -- can't remember all this stuff now, I forgot it immediately after we finished it. But I like the idea. |

That's good to read. I imagine a customer-based voting system could be another sturdy leg to support the reward system as a whole. It could serve to counter-balance the system by rewarding the more specialized or esoteric high-quality 'gems' in the library, which lag behind in 'usage rank' because of their specialization or narrow applicability. Categories for voting could include: 'Snippet of the Month' (awarded for introducing innovative or interesting techniques to the community) 'Technical Brilliance Award' 'Artistic Achievement Award' 'Most Inventive Filter' 'Crafty Bastard Award' (for solving filter problems thought to be very difficult or unsolvable) ![]() 'Best Specialized Effect' 'Best Specialized Texture' 'Effect of the Month' 'Texture of the Month' etc... Another thing to consider would be monthly filter challenges. Winning filters could earn their authors a reward. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Just about every 2D/3D art forum i have ever visited hosts weekly/monthly challenges and the results are almost always nice. I think it would go far to help the quality of the filter library to continue upwards. Plus i think it would help the "word of mouth" marketing of FF if the really sweet filters created from said challenges popped up for display in other art forums. And im all for rewards for specialized filters, as i see a lot of really nice looking filters that may not serve any grand purpose other than to be customizable eye candy. ![]() |

Just finished a long overdue complete filter library browsing session... and oh my! ![]() ![]() When I look at all the content value that this beta has generated sort of alongside the bug-hunting, I'd say it's been all the more successful. There are already so many filters living up to and even surpassing what the competition rides into battle, it's mind-boggling. You gotta give a 'hats off' to the devs for implementing the reward system right from the start to build up this amount of content for the final release. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

A reward system does help "drive" the thing, but a somewhat open/lax demo period has probably helped too. There is a point at which the beta/demo becomes old news, and I'd say they're more than straddling that line currently, (ie = release this beast already ha-ha), but yeah, it is building up content meanwhile.

The programme is I agree underpriced compared to some, but I would say that it is priced at a level to get people onboard. I have enjoyed using the software, but I am not going to go flat out in the hope of getting a free copy. I will use it to the limits of what I do, I will try and design filters, but I haven't yet needed to create a special filter for anything I am working on.

True. Get this thing out already and start with the next beta, hehe. I want to get my hands on all the new stuff, like bombers for example. ![]() But most likely, that will have to wait a year or so... --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

It seems like they've more or less said it's going to be released Macrh 1st no ? The current beta expires end of Feb. and I'd swear they said this is the last beta, so....

Yes. Release has been announced for first quarter 2007. We're just waiting for the help wiki to be finished (and maybe some bugs to be squished). I was just prematurely speculating about the start of the next major release beta though, which will certainly include more neat stuff to play around with. There's still a lot to discover about the toolset, I suspect. i hear that version 8 of FF makes its own filters. you turn on your computer, double click the icon and it re-writes your o/s as a dedicated filter maker. it then logs into the filter library and several other databases across the web, extrapolates need based on what it finds, writes the filter and uploads it to the library. the only input the user needs do is set a 'seed' and let it run

Re: Reward System
I was thinking that someone who wants to earn a high-usage on his own filter (to win a reward) might try to use his own filter a lot just to sway the statistics. So maybe it might be a good idea to disqualify or limit the count from an author's own usage? (If something like this isn't already there.) Another thought is if someone uses a filter for animation, that filter may get used a ton. (e.g. 30 times for one second of film.) Maybe this is okay -- but if it seems to give a skewed representation of what most the people want/use, an idea here might be to have a max limit from a single user per day or something? Just some ideas -- I'm hesitant to mention them for fear of inspiring abusers... (So I won't mind if someone from FF reads this and erases my post.) |

@ssamm: I have a feeling the Filter Forge team have taken this into consideration beforehand to deter gaming of the system (including unique IPs?), but I'll wait for official commentary.
