What do you use (or will you use) Filter Forge for?

I have a short list:

1)Creative Outlet (FF is fun)
2)Family pictures and photos (Yeah I look even stupider as a comic book)
3)School, I am a teacher and want to use filter forge in a variety of applications, visuals on worksheet, art in the classroom, learning about graphs!!!!
4)Website Creation (especially my teacher webpage, most teacher's webpages stink... bad) smile:)
5)Children Books (I and my family are going to write kid books, mainly for our own families, and I want to use FF to help with the illustrations, the adventures of "generic name" and the "generic object" )
6)Board Games (I like making board games, I like illustrating board games)

I would like to hear all the other good ways others use FF. Note, this forum excludes Crapadilla, because world conquest is not considered "good".

2) I use the output of the filters for textures on my 3d work

Agreed, that megalomaniac bastard by the name of Crapadilla better not post in this thread!

[0) My secret world domination plot. Conquest is for losers!]

1-3) Creative outlet and fun way to pass time...

4) Creating textures for use in 3D systems straight out of FF. (Only that currently, I'm doing less 3D stuff than I should...)

4.5) Creating seamless texture layers for more complex photoshop textures.

5) Creating seamless brushes and stamps for 3D texture & displacement painting.

6) Creating compositing & visual fx elements.

Well, yes! I just might! smile;)

I'm working freelance with a small pool of artists, and one of them maintains a website that we also use to showcase the collaborative work of our studio. The site is rarely up-to-date though, so don't expect any recent work; we're probably the most chaotic lazy-ass bunch ever when it comes to web stuff!

Anyways, I teamed up with the guys in mid 2005 and since then, we produced some neat stuff, among which this one still is my 'past' favorite. I contributed a good dose of 3d modeling & texturing for the set and characters, as well as loads of lighting/rendering and compositing work, sleepless nights, empty bags of coffee beans, sweaty t-shirts, silly jokes, dirty mouses & keyboards, avid junior operator harassments, and other nasty stuff. Note that this project was summer 2006, so it doesn't include any FF stuff yet, I was just making my first few filters back then, and testing FF's capabilities.

Oh yeah, and I'm not gonna post anything on our current soon-to-dominate-the-world projects though (which do include FF). Strictly confidential! smile;) smile:D

As I wrote, it's not 'my' site. The small clip you are referring to is from a theatre project that our company's founder did on his own a few years ago. Very nice stuff, but I got nothing to do with it... smile:D

A few words from him regarding this project:

"Actually this was my holiday project, to do the set design of a theatre play, when i was fed up with customer demanded crap. the whole underwater sequence was shot in a public bath during one hour before the other swimmers came in. it was shot with a handheld dv camera in a "plastic bag" for diving and with holding breath. the female actor had about 4 good seconds under water before she struggled to the surface again. 1 black plastic tarp 2*2 metres to cover the wall, one backlight and 1 underwater-flashlight. ...and 1 week postproduction smile:) the result is actually 3 films running with 3 projectors synchronized."

Also see this page for some stills.

Here is some shots of maps using textures generated by Filter Forge:

I'm using heavily modified quake 1 engine named Darkplaces. It is enhanced with per-pixel lighting, GLSL shaders, Q3BSP maps, skeletal models and much more.

huh, never heard of darkplaces. looks like a mod of the original quake, not II or III. interesting. and this is a mod of the entire engine, not just an editor for it. also interesting.

is there an editor built into this thing? and how do you get screenshots without all the other little icons and stuff that show up in quake screens?

i ask all this because i'm currently playing with gtkradiant, the editor for quake iii, which i'm using to build levels in wolfenstein et. so, i've got an interest.

We are using GtkRadiant 1.5.0 (older is unsupported because there is no gamepacks for them)

Deluxe Quake is entirely redone game. Only thing that still exists in it - a Quake-based engine. All GFX content, menu, hud, textures, level systems and monsters will be redone (Id does not allow to modify and publish copyrighted content). And certainly we have an option to turn off all GFX drawing specially for screenshots making smile:)

red, read your intro on that first page again, the one that begins: 'your practical resource'. then look in that paragraph down to: 'but we can, not promise that it wont be useless'. i believe you may want to drop the 'not' there (and the comma after 'can').

1) Making photshop work better/faster *
2) Creative Outlet (FF is fun)
3) Making Game Assets 2d: textures, processing of flat elements like maps.
4) Making Game Assets 3d textures: having an integrating thing which can make bump spec, and diffuse etc all at once is pretty great.
5) Making combined bump / diffuse brushes for Zbrush.

*What I mean by #1 is that there are a lot of multi-step processeses that I do in photoshop which can be done ever-so-much faster and better in FF; particularly in batches. Lately I've been using FF instead of photoshop actions - just making a FF filter, running it on a bunch of files, and then tossing that filter. These are usually pretty simple things, but it's great to have a filter that just does them.

EG: One of the annoying things I have to do a lot is make sure that the alpha channels of animation frames (of like explosions and stuff) are all zeroed out smoothly around the edges. (ie so there are no non-transparent bits at the edge) This is not hard in pshop, but it's kind of a drag. No problem in FF though... it's like the simplest filter ever (frame+set new alpha) but it's better than doing it in Pshop.

btw: I REALLY wish there was a way to get a random variation number everytime you started FF from Pshop, or hit the variation button. That would allow you to, say, use Pshop to run FF a BUNCH of times.

I make textures for using in Second Life ... and instead of just nabbing the visible pre-sets and re-tinting them like a cheapskate, I actually BOUGHT the software and will be making my own variations.

I'm not quite ready to enter the obviously addictive world of filter-making, because just fiddling with the controls is skating close to the edge of obsessive. I'm up at 2AM making "just one more" plaid.
See http://xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name...ID=1155194 for an example ... not promoting, but I know y'all like to see your stuff in the wild.

It's fun! and you know you want too smile;) smile:D

I got addicted to making filters when I had the demo version so I bought FF! Weeee!

Now I use it to make filters and textures. Textures I sell in Second life (well some of them) and I have a few on 3dcommune, need to add more to that site or maybe Renderosity sometime although not sure about the 50% cut with Renderosity.

I tend to sell mainly textures from filters I create, but I have to say I have got one or two really cool ones in SL but I do not use the presets images, there are sliders so I use them.. either that or the variation button which can create some amusing images.. um mind them ones unless they look usable tend to get discarded.

Oh I also use FF to enhance images and text etc smile:D

I escaped your fate, because the demo version wouldn't work on my Linux box. I bought the cheapo 1-filter version to test it out, and when it worked OK, bought the Basic. I'll probably upgrade later and see how it works.

I use FF for work, but I make excuses at work to use it. Oh how I love it! I'll often go to work on the weekends or stay late and work on random filters.

Here's a video of a game I worked on which uses a lot of FF textures (custom made).

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40763.html

And some screen shots...

http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/142/14...mgs_1.html

I made all the particle fx and most of the environment textures/models (and the videos hehe). About 90% of the textures I made were done in FF. A few of them I'm trying to refine so I can submit to the library.

The game is on Playstation Network. Feel free to buy it, it's $10. smile;)

It runs as a standalone.

I'm using it (Basic version) with Win2000 on VMWare and a Linux host. No PhotoShop in sight.

Forget that ... I though you were talking about FF, not the game.
