How it is better to operate applying filters to small pictures?

Applying filters to pictures that are of rather large size is generally easy to do without doing too many modifications in the filter settings or in the picture.
But in case of small pictures the results are not so good. What do you suggest to do? What settings in FF is better to try to change?
I understand that it may depend filter by filter. What about filters like Fiber Image or Gridwarp?

you might get more responses if you show some examples of what you're talking about here. tough to say anything without seeing something.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

First try the "size, pixels" slider.

If that doesn't help you can enlarge your image ahead of time, apply the effect, and then scale it back down.
