Many compositing systems usually consolidate similar image processing operations to eliminate unnecessary processing. Consolidation means that two (or more) operators in a sequence will internally be replaced by a single operator for the sake of efficiency. Although in more complex cases, consolidation must be taken care of by the user through thoughtful script construction, simple sequential consolidations usually happen automatically.
Looking at an example in FF, sometimes consolidation seems to occur, and sometimes it doesn't. The topmost branch in the image below appears to be consolidating (the two BC ops can be compressed into a single BC op), the middle and bottom branches don't, judging from the difference blends. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

No, the current FF architecture doesn't consolidate operations.

Alright, that explains what I'm seeing here. Are you planning to implement consolidation in the long run?

No, I don't think so -- only a few operations can be safely consolidated, and the infrastructure for that would be very expensive to develop.
