I wasn’t sure where to post this smile:?:

I’ve noticed similar/identical filters popping up on a regular basis.
For instance, there are over a dozen wood filters.
Should there be a system for picking the best one and deleting the others, or perhaps grouping them together somehow?

hi michael,

yes, and it's going to get worse. my solution for this is increasing the user folder options so that folks can make, alter and delete their own folder and can then sort and arrange their filters better. i think a 'tag' system was also proposed. the combination of these two things would make life easier when keeping track of all the filters now available.

this discussion has come up before, but with over 2200 filters now available, it bears discussing again. i wouldnt want anyone's filters to be just removed by a 'censor' simply because it resembles another. it might well be that i prefer the one that got removed. so, that's dangerous ground there.

so, let the filters come but let me be able to sort and arrange them as i see fit. that's what's currently missing.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Why don't they just dump any filter that is "low usage" after 30/60/90 days ? That'd clear off 1/4 or more of mine, and probably 1/4 or so of all of them. Then, they could be resubmitted if they were improved/updated, to try again. That seems like a decent start, but yeah, the problem grows every time a new batch of filters is put in the library.

I have to say that I have mixed feelings about all this. I have seen several wood filters go by, but the previews don't look the same. So I am assuming they have unique qualities. And even though the total count of all filters is high, they do have key words, and I can search them just like I search the Internet for a specific tool.

I guess the biggest problem I have is determining what I already have. I don't have many downloaded, but it takes some time to look in every category here.

But I do think that eventually there will need to be a way to retire some filters. For example, if we had 500 similar filters, it would be overwhelming to try to find the right one with key words.

Is there a way to automate scanning through the components the filters are made of, and coming up with hyperlinks for closely-related ones that may be based off the same source, or something similar? I wonder how clones and such are currently detected, but there oughta be an easy way to, for example, compare Filter A to Filter B and see that they have 79% or whatever in common.

I don't see how that could work. For example, simply moving one element to a different place in the chain can drastically change the results. So two filters with similar elements can be very different.

I really don't think a lot of filters is a problem now. When I do a search and see several choices, I think it's a good thing. But I guess it could become a problem. If it does, I guess Filter Forge staff can look at retiring filters. If this happens, it would probably be best to move them to an archive, not delete them.

I think that is a good point..Maybe now a filter has a low usage but still is a good
filter but not very handy or useful..But it might have some good ideas or methods..

I think that the additional folders is an excellent option and I feel that maybe through the applications built in filter browser that maybe there should be a slider that the user can move that will filter out those below the threshold they set

for instance they may only want ones that are in the top 15 % download range
or the top 7% usage rank

I dont think all should just catagorically be removed unless they are just blatently a clone of someone elses or just a repeat of the same filter over and over

Im not saying all this for any personal gain since either way the majority of my filters would only be in the average usage range

And Ill be frank --I donload them all because its fast enough to browse through them in my opinion

if I have some favorites I can temporarily copy them to my folder with unique names like

q1 q2 q3 then see wich on I like more
