I got FF Pro a long time ago but didn’t use it much.

Recently decided to look into upgrading, but believe from what I’m reading that custom filter settings can’t be saved without the Studio version.

Is this correct?

No. Both the Pro and the Studio versions let you modify or create new filters. Check out the version comparison chart at the bottom of this page.

Thanks - I did; perhaps I’m misunderstanding what a Project document is.

This page suggests that filter settings cannot be saved without using a Project file.

What am I missing?

When you save an Image with a filter the parameters of the filter are not saved with the image , just the altered image.

Projects allow you to save the input parameters as well as the input image to the filter. You can chain the results with multiple filters/images. Does this make sense?

It doesn’t make sense that a “Pro” version of software doesn’t allow the user to save filter settings.

So, my interpretation seems to be correct.

I won’t be upgrading.

That’s what presets are for. If you find settings that you like, add a new preset then save the image.

So every filter in Pro or Studio has presets with parameters you can save. But like most filters, parameters are not saved with the output image.

Hi Rachel -

I'm confused...

"So every filter in Pro or Studio has presets with parameters you can save."

Ok, but... How? smile:)

The page I linked above states (emphasis mine)

"However, in Filter Forge versions before 10.0 you couldn't save these settings – only the final image. That means you couldn't get back to editing your artwork in Filter Forge without remembering all the dimensions, filters, and settings and putting them in place again."

implying that settings cannot be saved; unless "parameters" and "settings" are being used interchangeably.

Anyway - there doesn't seem to be an upgrade path from Pro to Studio.

It fairly easy to do, but you should be working on a copy of the filter if you are using an existing filter as a basis. "Edit" the filter then choose "Save Filter As ..."
The steps to add and modify a Preset are shown below in the image.
You also need to know how to locate and copy the modified filter to another location as a back up.
FF10 has a Backup function but that grabs all the filters, so if you have a many filter installed, you could be copying dozens or even hundreds of filter simply to save the one you modified.
