Hi,
I'm designing for apparel. I would like some filters that can make nice designs that will fade to transparent without using things like opacity since that does not work well with printing on garment. I want to make unique designs without a boxed look that can fade around the edges. These designs need to end up with a transparent background. I also add designs to many other products like books and mugs. Sure would love it if anyone here has some nice suggestions for filters. I'm open to many styles too. Thank you in advance and I hope all are doing well during these times. |

If you want unique designs, then I encourage you to open up the filter editor and start experimenting
![]() To transform smooth masks into a fully opaque fade, you could, for example use the threshold component and set the smoothing to 0. |

Wow, thank you emmme. I'm sure you were being very helpful with your comment.
In all the years through all the filterforge iterations that I have used filter forge, I never thought of that, lol. But seriously, every time we use a filterforge filter it is likely making something unique. so, let me rephrase myself somewhat. Can anyone here with a lot of filter-making experience, send me in a few directions to experiment where I might have a good outcome. For at least the best ways to manipulate fades into transparency without just changing opacities to 25% like in photoshop layers panel. It is fun to go down rabbit holes with filters but I just run out of time to experiment as much as I want to. Migraines and special needs daughter takes a lot of time. Filter forge is a big time saver if you hit the right filters. Thank you |

Context sometimes matters.....If you have an ideal of the direction that you want to go then an image would help in pointing you in the right direction......
as emme posted about, the threshold is useful in creating a transparency method..... Here is just one example of using the threshold....It all depends on the pattern or final outcome/look that you want for the filter....It may be used at the end or within the filter itself for different parts of a pattern... ![]() Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

The Step component could also be useful.

Yeah, my point was - it'll be easier to give advice once you've figured out roughly what it is you want to achieve. Some quick experimentation will often help with that. If you already have an idea, maybe post some example images, like CFandM said.
btw, that right to left flow always looks so trippy ![]() |

I think that what has told CFandM is not about creating any filter, is just to modify a little any filter you may want to make it transparent, using the alpha (background transparency) as you do not want that to use the opacity as told. There are some possible ways to convert a filter to use alpha, but it will depend on which filter you want to use, as not all the filters can use alpha because of their design Although you may want to just use the filter, there is no way to modify or change a filter without entering the Filter editor and modify it. If you show a filter that you may want to use, is possible to tell what needs to be modified to use alpha. |

Hi there, Forgive me if I do not make sense yet, I just woke up on my first cup of coffee lol. Here is a post that will help a tiny bit. I make some things like this: post I made a long time ago with replies One type of design I do needs a fade to the background. Such as with my artwork that is with photographs or paintings so a very boxed look. If you were to say just slap it on a T-shirt it would be like slapping a postage stamp on an envelope. A big box. Also, I do a lot of compositing of multiple photos. So, I need the effects to be realistically printed. Sometimes what you see in photoshop is not what you get in print if you design it without printing in mind. Sublimation printing and DTG need do not print opacity well at all especially when you start getting below 40%. For example: The white underlayment shows through and the printer gets confused with colors if too much opacity is used. I'm trying to get to the point where I can have filter forge do as much the heavy lifting as possible. Here are some end result examples that might help: I'll add them in separate replies |

Some things to keep in mind when working with the above type of samples. Filter Forge is great for some things but it is not a replacement for PS....Compositing a bunch of images is a whole lot easier and less time consuming in photoshop....They work hand in hand with each other....
With that said there are some filters that do blending but here is one that requires you to use photoshop and select what you want to keep in the image.....I do not know what version you use so this is for FF9..... After installing this open Photoshop and use the selection tool in photoshop and select the part of the image that you want to keep and open the FF plug-in..... This one is the same but uses the already existing alpha mask if there is one on the image.....

Ignore that first one...Forgot something in that first one with the selection needed...Here is the proper one....Right click and download then open in Filter Forge...

Thank you I'll give it a go.
And I agree there is no one tool for it all really. I'm just trying to put together a system and make as nice quality as possible and save time where it is possible. Plus be able to duplicate some of it and yet be unique. |

If you edit the filter one can tweak it for further use....Here is a tweaked version with an added feature and named the controls.....
