Just for grins, I tried installing and running version 6.0 on Linux Mint as a stand-alone generator.

Unlike my earlier attempts, FF6 installed without whining about missing modules AND launched without crashing. So far it's been able to load one of the default filters, change settings and draw the changes.

I may be able to delete my WinWhatever virtual machine.

ADDING: I get an error when trying to download more filters by browser ... it appears to be a WINE/browser problem, not FF

If I use the "obsolete" built-in FF method, it can download filters.

ADDING MORE: Alas, if I try to open an image to apply the creative effects, it can't open the file. Again, it's WINE not understanding the commands.

So, it's back to the VM. Sigh.

From the WINE project ...

This is how you can open filterforge filters from firefox. (which would avoid the WINE/Browser problem).

1) As root, open a text editor and create the file /usr/bin/filterforge. Copy and paste the script below, adjusting for your own wine configuration.

#!/bin/sh

export WINEARCH=win32
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Filter\ Forge\ 4/Bin/Filter\ Forge.exe $@

2) Save the file, and then as root run the command "chmod +x /usr/bin/filterforge", without the quotes.

3) In firefox, type "about:config" into the address bar (without quotes) and hit enter.

4) Right click, select New->Boolean. Enter the name as "network.protocol-handler.expose.filterforge" without the quotes, and then set the value to false.

5) On any filter's page, click on the button "Open this filter in Filter Forge". Firefox will prompt you for a program to open the filterforge link with. Select /usr/bin/filterforge, and then confirm.

NOTE: When attempting to open filter links, Filterforge will frequently popup a warning message that it could not connect to the server. Simply hit Retry and it should work normally (unless you are having internet problems, of course)

What version of Linux are you running?

I did not succeed with FF6 and the Linux I was using.

Newer versions of WINE, Linux and FilterForge work with none of the messing around with text files and concioles.

(FilterForge 9, WINE 4.0, Firefox 74, and Linux Mint 19.3)
