Hi,

I have FF5 and love it. I am looking for a filter that randomizes the color pallet or scheme on the image so would get many variations of color combinations. If a gradient component is included so much the better.

FF already has a random button and they were thoughtful enough to include a previous bottom! So the random function in not a concern here. I do abstracts mostly so would like to see unusual color combinations.

Here is something I threw together quickly using a 12 color gradient snippet I wrote a while back. Let me know if this is useful. The original image is used for brightness. The saturation is controlled by the Gradient Saturation switch. If it is off, the output image uses the saturation from the original image. If checked, the output image uses the saturation from the gradient.

Click on the filter in your browser. It should ask you which program to run. Did it do that?

Also, it may be in the My Filters folder, which is below the Textures and Effects in the upper left pane of Filter Forge.

Which operating system are you using? Which browser are you using?

Hi Rick,

I click on Color Change.ffxml and it open up the text in Google Chrome.

I have Windows 10 64 bit
I use File Explorer which was Windows Explorer
I have chrome and Internet explorer
Filter Forge 5 and FF Librarian 5.

In File Associations ffxml was and is set to Filter forge.

Searched in my FF5 and with the Librarian for Color Change.ffxml but had no luck finding it.

Really want to check out your Color Change.ffxml so lease advise.

Three things you can try. If these don't work, we will try something else.

1) Google Chrome appears to be the problem. After the text appears in Google Chrome, try to do a File / Save to your desktop or download folder. Then double click the downloaded filter (Color Change.ffxml).

2) Try using Internet Explorer as your browser. Go to the forum and click on the Color Change.ffxml from IE. It should either ask you which program to run or save it. Try both.

3) Google Chrome appears to not have right file association with .ffxml. I don't know how to change it (don't have it), but if you can figure that out, you get an A+.

Let me know how it goes.

UPDATE: 4th thing. Try holding the Ctrl button down and clicking the link from Google Chrome. There might be a save option.

Rick,

It was Google Chrome that created the problem.
Worked great with Internet Explorer.

Thanks for all the help.

I will now check out Color Change.ffxml and let
you know how it work out.

Rick,

This filter runs slow but when I luck some of the colors except for 3 it is very fast. Your presets were interesting but beyond that I found only a few color combination that were useful. Not sure what I was expecting. There may be more that I can do to help it get colors to my liking.

It may need a contiguous color or color range parameter. In the contiguous color parameter a gradient of the color may yield some interesting results.

Perhaps several Hue, Saturation Brightness sliders one such set linked to a color that is on the image? Maybe jumble the color wheel?

I checked some other filters that had color the title and found several of them that I may go back and review. I made your and a few of them as my Favorites.

Thanks again.

Hi Rick,

Apparently my message was lost in the bit world. I will attempt to re-write here.

I have huge image file and so for me time is a factor. Your Color Change Filter works very fast as it turns out. When I un-lock Color Smooth that is when it shows down. However when I lock Color Smooth your filter continued to be slow.

Now that Your Color Change Filter work so fast I am getting some interesting color combinations. I am sure there is more to this filter so I need to play around with it a bit more.

Thanks again.

The Color Smoothing option is slow. Nothing that can be done about that. However, many images do not need it, so you can set this to 0 (or a low value 5 or under), which as you have noticed is much faster.

I have a couple of filters that I have written that do false coloring, maybe you can try them out:
Channelizer
Picasso Redux

Over the next few days I will look at Color Change and think about more ideas on color manipulation. Have fun!

I have used both the Channelizer and Picasso Redux. Thanks for these usable filters.

I did better with not using the Color Smoother but will try low settings. Love how fast the color variations render in FF. Looking forward to any new color manipulation features.

Although a faster render sometimes is desirable, you can only get a certain look by sacrificing time.

Here is an update to Color Change. I've changed the Gradient Saturation checkbox to a Grey to Color slider which gives you more control over the grey areas. Here's an example.

Rick,

Thanks.

Color Change 2.ffxml is excellent. The gray is helpful.
Also I am learning how to use FF and this filter and this has been helpful.
The time factor was not all that bad. I go thru many
attempts in FF by the random button than to fine tune.

Here is another version of Color Change. This one adds a Color Mix control, which mixes between the original color and the gradient. Also, the original color can be "rotated" with the Gradient Offset control. Have fun!

Looking forward t trying the Color Change 3.ffxml
But will be later tonight or tomorrow.

I am a bit confused on how to work the colors.
Is there an order to the colors? What is best to
be locked?

BTW initially I liked the Color Change 2.ffxml
and ignored the Color Change.ffxml but I
accidentally opened it and really alos like it.

A quick color tutorial.

The Color Wheel: it starts with Red, then Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, Magenta, then repeats again with Red.

When you pick the colors with any of the Color Change filters, make them full brightness. The final result does not use the brightness from the 12 color gradients.

Several ways you can go:

1) Keep your colors in the same order as the color wheel. This will produce a smoother result.
2) Don't keep the colors in order. This will create a more abstract and possibly a rougher result with more color banding.
3) Keep the colors in order, but only use a couple of colors. This will result in a result like a 2 or 3 tone graphic.

One idea would be to pick 6 colors you like, lock them and try using the randomizer (Next Variant). I would lock the Gradient Repeat as well.

Have fun!

Rick,

They do say be careful what you wish for. Now I am making TOO many variations on the color.
Good that you can’t put the Genie back in the bottle!

Thanks for the color advice. I am getting better at using this filter.

Is there a correlation of the color from the original image to the color Color Change filter

Is the Gradient Offset best on Color Change 1? On CC 3 I cannot get washed out or very light colors.

Is it possible to add metallic or chrome effects? A color to 3D effect?

Is there any way to get a gradient effect like from a light yellow to a deep yellow? Perhaps a gradient from one color to another? This will perhaps involve contiguous color range organization?

Another thing that I love is displacement effects perhaps to displace by color range?

Thanks for all the help.

PS You may want to add a link to this thread in the “About” so other users may be helped by the information available here.

In Color Change 3, yes. The color mix control uses all of the original color if it is set to 0. Set Gradient Offset to 0 and you should see the original color in the colored areas of the picture. Set Color Mix to 100 and none of the original color is used.

Here's an example from CC 3. Is this what you mean? I set Grey to Color to 2,3, or 4 to get a washed out look.

Yes. Instead of cluttering up the filter with more controls, try using the Surface Texture Engine. You can get metallic looks and 3D like effects. It is done with the lighting model in FF. I'll show you a couple of examples using the previous example. This one uses the default preset.

The light yellow to deep yellow is more difficult given how CC works. The filter takes the Brightness from the original image, so light to dark is not possible with the current method. I'll think about this long term. I think I've got you going now... smile;) I've got some other experiments going on in Chaos Fields.

Here is an attempt at a better explanation of how the colors are mapped. The original image uses these hue values: on the left, Red is value 0, on the right of this graphic is magenta turning to red, value 1. This is the classic spectrum (continued below):

In the default preset of CC3, I create a gradient that starts at red, but is backwards, and can be rotated with the Gradient Offset. It works the same way, value 0 at the left, value 1 at the right. In this example Gradient Offset = 50:

In CC3 set the colors all to nearly white but the image was still bright color.
I Set the Gray To Color like you said and still full bright colors.

I then set one one color to bright red and red did not appear on the image.
I then set 2 colors to bright red and got a mostly blue image.

Here we go again... I've changed CC as follows:
The Grey to Color control is now changed to GreyToColorToFade. The old method of coloring works by setting the control to 21. Color is 11. Grey is 1. You can fade between them. Setting Color Mix to 10 and GreyToColorToFade to 21 is your best bet for recreating CC1.

Living means you have to visit the dentist, do grocery shopping, pay the bills, sleep etc. This takes one in this case me away from the art. That is why it is unfortunate.

Another humorous one is and I occasionally use it "work has gotten in the way of my retirement".

I see. Yes, I understand what you mean.
Many times I'm busy all day and I start working on some filter when it is 1:30 am or 2:00. Ha! Ha! I remember that one time someone commented on a filter I made "Very nice, but why did you make it so dark?". Well, because I made it in the middle of the night, with all lights off, so.... it looked bright that time. smile:p
