I'm new to Filter Forge 9, and I've been going through various filters on the website. I see a load of filters for Textures and Effects, but I'm trying to figure out if there are any filters here that would be used by serious hobbyist photographers or pro photographers. So far, I haven't found any but I might be missing a lot. I would appreciate comments or suggestions regarding Filter Forge filters that would add that special magic to a photo, as well as your explanation or comment on why you say so.

I mean I use all of my stuff for some professional work but here are a few that are photography specific that I made in the past. These are many recreations of other filters I've seen online that kinda do similar. Obviously they're not perfect recreations.
Ranged sharpen - allows you to apply a highpass driven sharpen effect on separate frequencies/scales which gives you pretty decent tonal control. https://www.filterforge.com/filters/9726.html HDRize - Attempts to reproduce the now out-dated "HDR effect" that became pretty popular back 10 years ago. Although this might be useful still for flattening out bright and dark areas so maybe some use still. https://www.filterforge.com/filters/9812.html Random Retro Camera - Basically gives you a random retro-camera effect based on seed and a few limited parameters. The idea here is to get unexpected results and not be a control freak who needs sliders for every parameter. https://www.filterforge.com/filters/14551.html Point and Shoot v2 - Retrocamera effect but with more control over how things look. It's a bit dated but might be useful. https://www.filterforge.com/filters/10007.html |

Thank you, Skybase, for your detailed reply. I'm grateful. To some degree, I also answered my own question by just trying stuff. I had a wrong understanding of Filter Forge when I started using it this week. But it works well with Affinity Photo and as I try to make filters and test the existing ones on my images, I'm starting to get a better idea of how to use it. It requires a new way of thinking - it's not like the plugins I'm used to working with. I see that it is selection aware, too, so when I sel ect portions of my image and then send the image fr om Affinity Photo to Filter Forge, the filter only affects the selection. That is pretty nice!
Thanks for the filters you've pointed out in your reply. I will be sure to check them out. |
