Arielle. I understand your doubts.
As Sharandra said, some filter maker only made 1-2 presets. But the Filter Forge library is made for showing more examples. So, when the presets aren't enough, it automatically generate some more examples.
Anyway don't worry. Most of the filters have 9 or more presets ( if you download my filters, they all have at least 9 presets

)
Some of the filters are slow. Especially if your computer is old or has not so much memory ( imagine that I still use Windows XP, so I also have speed problems. Ha! Ha! ).
If the program crashes with some filter, I suggest to close all other programs, especially Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Google Chrome, because they take a lot of memory. Using only Filter Forge is the best option. After you finish using Filter Forge, then you open other programs.
About buying.... Filter Forge is making the 5.0 version. If you want to have the latest version and you can wait... then in about 6-10 months the new version should be ready.
If instead you don't want to stop using it some months, you can just buy the 4.0 version ( it may be a good timing because Filter Forge company will start to discount the old version before the new version is ready ). Then, when the 5.0 version is ready, you can simply buy the update ( the update is less expensive than buying a full version of Filter Forge ).
