What is the best (most trouble free!) way to upgraded to FF4?
I own FF3.015. Should I do a complete uninstall and start from scratch or just download and install the new version?

Filter Forge 3 and Filter Forge 4 are separate programs: they don't share any filters/presets/user settings. I would suggest you install Filter Forge 4, get accustomed to it and then remove Filter Forge 3.

Just installed Filter Forge 4 on new MacBook Pro (OS X Maverick). No problems. Very smooth.
