How do you create new filters?
The basic styles are probably mainly : 1. Creator : Getting an idea. Knowing the program very well. Creating a new filter having a clear idea of what you do. 2. Collector : putting together 2 or more filters to obtain something new, basically having a plan on the final result. 3. Tester : having not a clear idea of a result but putting together filters that looks interesting and that could match together. I guess I'm on the number 2. I'm still not enough expert to create something from zero, but I'm probably good to "put the pieces together". |

Most of my filters were created with a very clear concept in mind and/or are based on reference. Other filters initially were happy accidents resulting from pure experimentation.
I'm not a fan of jack-of-all-trades filters and 100+ controls monsters. Limitation is probably one of the most useful techniques for a successful filter design. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

I typically look around on the internet and I typically go "Oh I can probably make that in FilterForge" and that's how it typically starts for me. One reference goal and a bunch of techniques. Happy accidents always happen when you continue to mess around in FilterForge. Some of those became separate filters!
So basically I'd be 1. In the end I just screw around a lot too. But having a nice goal from the very start assures you some kind of point and purpose to building the filter. |

Hard to say really what I would be but I might be a 1.....Some filters are for a specific purpose or end result. Then others are just experimenting that turned out to have an interesting result so I built on that....
Then as Skybase and dilla stated some are derived from happy accidents.. ![]() Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

I'm new to this, only 6 filters. On my end most of what I was doing was looking at building a paint engine that could do what Paint Alchemy (defunct) and Painter do, but with better graphics and more direct control (check out Painter's hideous palette interface). Not much on the Mac besides Snap Art IMHO.
Built out of a need for the most part. The surface texture and cutout things I've come up with are frankly a big improvement on what Photoshop has to offer. In the end I'm a creator with collector tendencies. Math meets art meets psychedelia. |

Thanks. I'm downloading a trial today. I'll be interested to see if the 500 parameters for the paint engine are easy to edit. The sample images on the site were both excellent and awful! Looks like I'm a collector today

Kinda off topic sorry but I basically use Studio Artist regularly for film and animation work. The catch with those 500 parameters, much like FilterForge, is that they behave in relation to one another. Also, a lot of people who use StudioArtist are more likely collectors given 4000 or 5000 whatever paint synth parameters and a bajillion load more, you kinda never run out of examples. It's hard describing that program overall. It's incredibly unique, and it's not your average paint program.

Well, we are proving that we are collectors. I'm not so much into animation, but it sounds like an interesting program. Perhaps some of the features from SA will find their way into the next FF filter I write. Actually not off topic, it seems that other artistic and paint programs (both strengths and weaknesses) inspire a lot of what goes on here. I know that FF has pushed aside Painter in my toolbox. We are all looking for the holy grail: the perfect filter with 1 control (no controls?) and 1 second rendering.

Thanks to everybody for the answers.
To Crapadilla : Yes, I know you are a creator. I love many of your wonderful filters. ![]() Differently from you, I have the tendency to put a lot of controls. Partly because I have less experience than you in FF ( so my choices to get some result are less clear and less fluid than yours ), and partly because I always try to make filters able to give a very wide range of result. I know that it could be a mistake, because filters with too many controls are very hard to use. To Skybase : Yes, I'm learning to be a better creator too. I started to do also filters having a clear project. But more often the beginning is like few minutes ago, for example. Few minutes ago I was thinking "A 'cut out' filter plus a smudge effect could be interesting...". I get in my mind an idea of what will be the result, and I try to do it. More than wanting to make a "pineapple skin" or "retouching a photo", it is creating something new starting from some idea. By the way, Studio Artist is interesting. I saw it before, but they improved a lot since that time. I'll try it. Skybase. Your site and your facebook page are very nice. Great art. I'm looking now at : ![]() Like the floods in Thailand of some years ago. ![]() ( I was there that time ). |
