I own a sign shop and use Signlab for sign design
I occasionally need to add texture (metal / wood etc) to designs Trying to decide to buy Basic or Standard Pkg I can't see where I would design filters but Does the Basic pkg give me access to the full library and when it says access to I assume that library free? Right? If you buy basic and soon discover you want to progress, can you upgrade to Standard for a nominal? |

It is clearly put in the buy page that you will have acess to ALL the whole and complete filter library without any limit, the only problem is that you will not be able to modify any of the filter in the basic edition
YES, as far as I know, you can always upgrade from one version to another even inside the same number version and pay the difference, even from one number to another, for example upgrade Basic FF 3.0 to Standard FF 4.0 (when available)
Well this may be easy, as the only difference is that you may be able to modify or create your own filters. Maybe you wil not want to create your own filters, but perhaps you may want to modify existing filters in some way DIFERENCE BETWEEN Basic and Professional Are you going to use or need textures of more than 3000 x 3000 pixels? Do you want to have a faster rendering time by using Multi-core cpu rather than just a simple and loney core? Considering that Filter Forge is already usually slow with many filters in Multi-core cpu, I think that would be really worth to try the basic version, and see if this is good for you. Would you need to have render maps for 3D software or are you only going to make simple 2D textures? ![]() |

Hello
I have some questions too. When I buy v3 now, will I get v4 as well since it seems to be just around the corner? Or do I better wait till v4 is released? The website just mentions a beta key, but what about when the beta is done and the final version is out? What do you mean it uses just a single lonely core? I've a quadcore... I've had a quadcore for 3-something years and you want to tell me there is modern software out there that purposfully uses just one core? I actually would be pleased with the basic edition but as you mentioned, one may want to alter the filter settings and if that's only possible with the standard version I guess I'll take that one then. Unless it is really true that the software won't use my quadcore. I def. won't pay 120 dollars for a feature that is standard anywhere else. Regards, Lizzy |

SpaceRay, thank you for such a detailed answer! You really help us to cope with the forum!
![]() Lizzy, and here are the answers to your questions.
If you buy Filter Forge 3.0 you'll not have Filter Forge 4.0 automatically when it is released. It is another version and you'll be able to upgrade to it (when it'll be released, again). If you preorder Filter Forge 4.0 and ask for a free 4.0 Beta key (yes, you need to ask for it separately) you'll be able to use 4.0 Beta version until Filter Forge 4.0 is released (the 4.0 Beta key will expire right after the official release of Filter Forge 4.0).
You can see the Compare Editions table on this page (at the bottom of the page). There you can clearly see there's a limit on the number of CPU cores in the Basic and Standard versions (they can use max 2 cores). In the Professional version you can use all available cores.
Did you know about the new Filter Forge Professional by Subscription? You can use it: this way you'll receive all the features at once, unlimited number of cores, free upgrades (subscription always provides you with the latest Filter Forge version) and a small quarterly fee to pay. And by the way, now we have 70% discount for all editions Regards,

Thanks for the reply. The Buy page only shows version 3. No mention of a v4 pre-order. All I found was a pre-order upgrade. But I want v4 not v3+upgrade. I guess I have to wait.
I know the compare table, but since there is no word about how many cores the other versions use, I assumed 'no limit' meant 6+ cores. Just now that I wanted to copy the line I noticed that there's a 'mouse-over' tip with additional info. Honestly who would expect that? No reason to move the mouse there. There should be a note. Why can't the standardversion support a quadcore and the pro six and eight cores? Quadcores are sooo old. Support for quadcores is normal by now (except for games, but some do already). Now is the time in that GPU support for rendering becomes a standard... slowly. edit: The render speed of the trial is good, for the reduced preview ![]() Will there be plugins for other image editors but Photoshop? Since Adobe dropped their sell and force rent-only upon their customers I'll have to leave them in a few years (CS6 will last a while) and switch to Gimp... or maybe Corel Paintshop Pro (haven't tried that one out yet; Gimp seems nice except for its lack of non-destructive editing). Renting software is more expensive over time than buying. I don't make a living out of my hobby. |
