The large image preview in Image Placement dialog is not 1:1. Clicking the "Actual Pixels" does not result in actual pixels (i.e. 1:1), either.
This is quite annoying as the Image Placement dialog is the only way to view the loaded images isolated.

Thats not needed. Create a new image at say 600x600, new filter with a color control and load a bigger image to that. When zooming in (in the Image Placement dialog), you zoom in on a smaller version.
I realized that the "Show Original" checkbox will load the full image. But things are still confusing. If you uncheck the "Show Original", what scale is then used? It does not relate to the global image size, and actual pixels makes little sense.
I suggest removing the "Show Original" and always use checked "Show Original" mode.

Sorry, I still don't understand. Are you speaking about the main window or Filter Editor?

GMM, I'll handle the question.
Sphinx, Note that the Image Placement window doesn't just show the image in its original dimensions -- it shows the image placed and aligned within the bounds of the main image. Try to load a 600x600 image when the dimensions of the main image are, say 777x555 pixels.
The preview resolution was chosen simply to match the dimensions of the preview area of the Image Placement window. We haven't chosen the original one because we wanted quicker previews, which is not as important for mere image resampling, but is very important in case of Overrides -- the fewer pixels we render, the faster the preview will be.

Ok, I thought that the full version was already in memory.. well, I'm just mentioning this because if you as user choose to enter the Image Placement dialog with intention of inspecting the image, then you most likely want the full version and not some downscaled. But then again I understand now why its made this way.
What I'm really missing is a fast view original option in the main view (like an eye icon or something). Currently I have to enter that dialog and check "Show Original".

Don't forget that FF can handle images up to 65000x65000 pixels on any amount of memory, so it is perfectly possible to not have the full image in memory.

The main view also has a Show Original checkbox, and the Ctrl+R (Cmd+R) hotkey for that.

Yes, but thats for the loaded main image. It is exactly this quick option I miss for the color control loaded images. I have to fiddle with dialogs and all to inspect the various images and compare.
E.g. ctrl + left mouse click on the small color control image icon, could temporary show the full color control image in the main view (while you hold down the mouse button).

Let me give you a practical example:
I constructed a multiple LDR images -> HDR merging filter. I have 12 exposure stops loaded in color controls. Now I need to inspect how the filter handles details from the various stops. This means entering the Placement dialog, checking "Show Original", scrolling to the right location (which I see behind the dialog in the main rendering), and this for every exposure stop.. A/B comparison is a practical nightmare..
