The interesting thing is that after installation, it run once. Then I hibernated my pc and now it always crashes.

I tried XP SP3/vista compatibility mode and run as admin, but didn't help.

EDIT: Reboot didn't help either.

Hmm... if I delete/rename the Filter Forge 2 app data directory, then it runs once.

EDIT: The crash happens if either the "Search index" or the "System" directories exist.

Did you use installer's "Import data from prev. version" feature?

Yes, I did. However after reinstalling without the import option, the crash still happens.
I also tried both the plain and the SSE2 exe, no change.

Try to delete (or temporary rename) "%APPDATA%/Filter Forge 2" folder and re-run the program.

Could you please post a full path name to your %APPDATA% foolder?
Ex. "C:\Documents and Settings\My User Name\Application Data"

The problem may be related to the UNICODEd user name...

It's C:\Users\Zoltan\AppData\Roaming\Filter Forge 2 .

I removed the "read only" flag from this dir and all sub dirs, also made sure everyone has full control.

OK. Please check if there's a file named "Filter Forge x86-SSE2.log" in your %TEMP% directory? If yes, please post it here.

Thanks for your report! It's much clearer now.

Could you please clear a content of your %TEMP% folder (a folder with your temporary files) and re-run the program?

I presume there's a strange file name collision that prevents FF from working in normal way.

I deleted all files which weren't used by other programs, but the crash persists.
I checked other directories called "Temp", but they are all empty and not in use as
far as I can tell.

Because of other problems, I restored win7 to an earlier state: fresh install with
all drivers and apps up and running.
FForge beta was not installed in that backup, so I installed it and now I get the
30 day trial window before the crash.

One file is definitely being changed in the temp dir: the log. Once I saw three or
four .tmp files popping up for a split second just when the crash window appeared.
I wasn't able to reproduce it so it might have been some other process. Still I
checked what files I have there with the tmp extension:

~DF3D3E2BF2307603BB.TMP
HTTB65C.tmp

Both of them are used by an app and can not be deleted. Could their name interfere
with FForge?

Please, download a new horfix: http://www.filterforge.com/download/F...0Setup.exe

It creates more detailed log which will help us to locate the problem.

Uhm, isn't that the install of v1?

EDIT: I installed it but didn't change a thing: v1 runs as always, v2 crashes as always.

Yeah, it was actually the link to FF1.x instead of 2.x smile:D

Please download this one

install it, run, wait for a crash and post "Filter Forge x86-SSE2.log" from your %TEMP% folder here.

The log files (both sse2 and plain x86), the generated bugreport html and 3 "bitmap cache" tmp files appear in the temp directory so user permissions seem to be in order.

e:\temp\

Both "Temp" and "Tmp" environment variables are set to that path.

I'd suggest temporary solutions: a) create a new user with a "standard" %TEMP% folder location and run FF2.x as this user; or b) set FULL CONTROL permissions for your current %TEMP% folder.

Meanwhile we make a hotfix that fixes the issue.

Thank you for you patience smile;)

Have you already tried to create a new user with standard %TEMP% folder?
I'm sure it helps.

By the way, I'd recommend you to set permissions for TEMP to FULL ACCESS only for one user - Zoltan, and to delete any permissions for that folder for EVERYONE, etc.

UPD.
Is your %TEMP% folder a regular folder on your local hard-drive or a RAM-drive or a SUBST-dir or something like this?

A new account with default settings can indeed run FForge 2.

The TEMP dir is a regular folder on an ordinary HDD. My system partition (c:) is on an SSD so I moved the temp dir to save space and IO wear.

I love the combined speed of the SSD and Win 7. smile:)
I have a 32 GB version (Super Talent UltraDrive ME FTM32GX25H), so it's just enough for the system. The hibernation- and pagefile, along with all the documents and programs are all on a spinning HDD. Still, Firefox starts faster than it takes me to decide which site I want to browse. smile:)

I'm still thinking of buying me a new SSD of higher capacity then is installed in my netbook with Win7 smile:D

Zoltan, BTW, can you post (or send me by private message) your "set" command output?

I'm still wondering why FF2.x fails to start on your PC... I've found the procedure in our code where it happens, but I still can't understand why. It looks like your TMP (or TEMP) environment variable is set to wrong value or that folder has no enough permission.

I sent you the SET command output.

The temp dir works for FForge v1 and all other apps and even FForge v2 if I delete the "System" and "Search index" before each run.

After a successful v2 run, the log says the following:

Bloody hell, you were right ZZ, the backslash at the end was the problem. I changed
e:\temp\
to
e:\temp
and now it works!
