This is repeatable and even re-occurs after rebooting.

Windows 10 system
NVidia 980 ti+
24 GB Ram

If FF5 is running and FF6_beta is attempted to be started from the start menu, the program will activate the cursor loading sequence animation and then quit without error or message. This is repeatable.

Verified:
FF5 link is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Filter Forge 5\Bin\Filter Forge.exe
FF6_beta is located at C:\Program Files\Filter Forge 6\Bin_x64\Filter Forge.exe

This is expected behavior. You can not run 2 versions of Filter Forge at the same time even if they are different versions.

Why should it? As Rick Duim said, this is expected behavior.

I agree that is not needed to be able to have both at the same time, why would you need to have both running at the same time?

Another thing that may be important

this happened to me, and is that if you have photoshop, and activate the Filter Forge through Plug In, you can NOT start filter forge as standalone, because is already running with Photoshop, so for using the Standalone, you need to close the Photoshop plugin window.

I think this is good that you can´t run two versions at the same time,

You can surely run two versions, one each time, in the same computer

Politely...

I think there are two issues here:

1) Two different versions 5 and 6 should be able to run separately and at the same time. (Adobe, Autodesk, Articulate, etc. all do... even pesky Houdini and Nuke). This is a model programming issue.

For demo and beta purposes, it is important to compare versions side by side. What works, what does not, expectations, and documentation, etc. at least in my workflow.

2) While I normally do not use the filter forge tool set for Photoshop because it is slow, using Photoshop and another program including Filter Forge stand alone should work. GenArts Particle Illusion works separately in After Effects and independently... together... on one machine. This is great for development and workflow implementation without waiting for After Effects to render out the scene.

I understand the provisions to "protect" your program. But I do not understand blanket terseness in comments like "Why should it". It appears that comments are not welcome.

Normally I don't enter into these areas of "conflict", however your point somehow comparing Particle Illusion with Filter Forge seems off...
1) Particle Illusion is not supported in Photoshop CC 2015 yet, seems like GenArts might be struggling...
2) The price of PI is over the top and they are not even offering subscription prices due to "demand".
So you are comparing apples and oranges, both price wise and function wise. And as an ex-programmer I can tell you that running two resource intensive programs at the same time will suck performance from both of them, giving you a false sense of how they might run with more resources. Would you run Photoshop while doing a video render and expect peak performance?

In the area of graphics and videos, there will always be short comings, to me this seems more like an entry for the Feature Request forum.

I'm sorry if my comment appeared too harsh. Didn't mean to offend anyone.

However I'll put it again: this is not an issue, and you won't be able to run two program copies at a time.

Sorry to say, but I think that there is no real reason to need to be able to run two FF versions at the same time

Maybe what you want is to be able to keep working on FF while it is still rendering the result, as you say that it is slow, but considering that FF seems to be prepared to take and need the most of the resources, a second version would work very slow and badly

There is an option to render the final results outside of FF with some external tools available, so you could keep working with FF while rendering the result with one version of FF
