Found some flowers that looked like that in the garden (still living even though we've had freezing here a while ago).
I have to ask my better half what those are, but the name in Swedish wont say you much, and a name in Latin even less.

But they look list like that smile;-)

@ Sjeiti - wonderful, I think I stick to wood and stones after seeing that pond;-)
@ Kraellin- "Swedish name: 'Höstaster', latin name 'Symphyotrichum novi-belgii', but the autumn turned the center brown from yellow smile;-)

very cool, sjeiti. the flowers are a little glossy. any way to turn that down a bit? and the balls one, very cool. i could easily see this branching into 'beads' and 'beadwork'.

totte, is this it: http://www.google.com/search?q=H%C3%B...age=1&rlz= and a google search on the scientific name produced 'new york aster'. thanks smile:)

Directional Paint Strokes.

I finally managed to make it work so that the strokes actually follow the contours in the image, not just change angle based on color or luminosity.

Hairy brush strokes that follow the selection edge.

Same with brush tip angle set to 90 degrees.

ThreeDee, I love it. I just had to figure out how to recreate it and I think I've got it smile:) Here's mine, I didn't get the style to be very good like your first example, but I think the directional strokes part is pretty close.

Ooh, nice. I thought for a second that was another Van Gogh!

Did you dig out my method in the Foil Wrap filter or come up with a different one?

For those curious minds: I created normal maps from the image (blurred version) and converted them into angles -- or an approximation thereof, since I couldn't figure out how to do it accurately. (This convoluted routine is in the Foil Wrap filter posted in another thread). Then that angle is fed to the Bomber angle input.

Now it just needs a canvas background and 3D brush strokes and it will be just about as good as some dedicated programs.

Okay, so I spoke out of my r's.

I had a different method in use in the Foil Wrap filter, so here's the basic form of the directional paint strokes.

This is just the basic form to show the idea and the technique involved. It could be made to look awesome with a few different "paint strokes" as Bomber particles.

I started from scratch, I figured there might be a snippet out there but didn't know what to look for. I ended up with a different approach. I had the same idea to make a normal map but went a slightly different way. I offset the blurred image 3 times in a triangle (didn't bother to do the exact math), inverted and multiplied with the original. Then assembled them into RGB and extracted H.

It's really interesting because the result that goes into rotation is quite different from yours but the final effect is very similar.

I copied my method into yours as an example. I noticed you're using a larger blur radius and applied to mine which helped a lot with transitional areas. Here's mine:

Hmm, interesting. I like your version, it is simpler and gets largely the same result. Gotta try it on another idea I am working on. What I'm really interested in is being able to make patterns follow a path (the selection edge) sort of like in Illustrator.

Here's one I was playing with: Barbed wire on a path.

Can you think of a way to do something like rope along a path?

Here's my take.
I'm using a modified version of Sphinx's Normal map generator posted earlier in this thread, I mucked with it to produce a more highly saturated map to get Hue info out of (in fact, it's so highly saturated that it would be unusable by itself), and also modified to work with non-sqare images (mad, mad props here for the Proportional Gradient snippet).
Here's a first pic:

That's really cool. I might have a go at rope after work. I haven't gotten the path aligning yet anyway, I'm not sure what you did to get that yet smile:p
