My question is does "HDR" mean 32 bit like in those After Effects plugins? I'm only guessing that the HDR bomber can output a larger range of tones (or even color?) than the regular bomber. Though I haven't seen enough to actually define anything.

Would be nice if somebody just describes what's going on behind each of those new components in some detail.

I've never worked with AE. smile:(
But I can take a brief explanation for FF HDR smile:)

About HDR:
HDR (High Dynamic Range) in the context of FF is an ability of a component graph to
pass RGB values which exceed the range (0, 1).
This definition is an extension to a standard HDR definition "HDR color is a color which luminosity is out of device luminosity range".
In FF you can use even physically impossible negative or different-sigh colors smile:D (actually they are just a 3-coordinates vectors)

About LDR:
LDR - low dynamic range
Some components can't use RGB values exceeding (0, 1) due to their algorithms.
For example: Brightness/Contrast, Noise Gradient and other components which use HLS model (HLS model is natively LDR). The same situation is in blending modes: some are natively-LDR, some can be HDR-ed

About ranges and numeric details:
Range (0, 1) in FF corresponds to (0, 255) integer color range.
FF rendering pipeline uses 32 bit double-precision floating point numbers for calculations. Transformations of floating point colors to/from usual 8-bit RGB colors occur only on loading/saving images.

Very chaotic explanation, I know =)

I hope we'll find time to set up a publicly-visible wiki for editing help articles. Perhaps we can even link them to the help links in the interface.

If you're making something with bright/hot/glowing particles, go with the HDR bomber.

If you're making something where you need negative colors, perhaps a custom noise generator, go with the HDR bomber.

Otherwise, use the regular bomber.

The advantage of the HDR Bomber is that it supports HDR colors. And it's disadvantage is that it has less blending modes available for particle blending and tinting -- not all of the blending modes can be converted to HDR.

Everyone, if you're going to ask technical questions, please post them as separate posts. Let's keep this thread on-topic.

Here's something I was attempting. I was trying to simulate bokeh effects using Filter Forge. After 4 or 5 hours, I felt unsuccessful so I turned the filter into something more asctetic.

This filter simply takes the highlighted areas and bombs a bunch of super bright rings in them. Results in something ... quite interesting.

Wow, great job Skybase on the galaxies and bubbles! smile:)

Using the bomber, I made a simple starfield. What's great about the bomber is each star is a definitive color, they glow due to HDR, and you get lots of "distant", smaller stars with roughness turned up.

I'm wondering if you already had tried this... but have you tried putting a map on "chance" for this?

The bomber is extremely useful! Back several months ago while attempting to make a similar filter, I ran into a ton of node/combination problems. I was getting lost in a forest of nodes and I was constantly wondering if there was a simpler way to do something.

I eventually realized that the bomber is a great solution for making pretty much anything complex happen. For example, the bomber was used to create the mountain ranges for this filter. Too bad the mountains are over-lapping right now, but it feels like I can easily fix this as well. smile;) Just a proof of concept. I'm probably going to remake this with the final version of FilterForge 2. In the mean time, here's what it can generate.

Well don't know if this will help but taking the long route might be possible...Don't know how you did the mountains but replace the image with one mountain in this filter.....You can even use the land mass as your greyscale so it only distributes the mountains within that area... smile:)

Thank you for the suggestion! Actually the bomber has been set up already so the mountain shapes get distributed via chance. I have a specific map which goes into the chance value and also the size. Which is how it makes the mountain range. Thanks again smile;)

Here's a result of playing around with the shapes. This solution takes less nodes and is bloody simple. Basically, I made two triangles, one black, the other white. The white one simply goes on top and covers the black one leaving behind the outlines which you see now. There are several problems including the sluggish render times, and over-lapping instances of mountains that look extremely awkward but otherwise I'm slowly getting there.

Simple fix, make the alpha on the mountains 1 and white and set then preset to large in front. Then when you are blending the mountains set the blend type to multiply. Done! smile8)

Double post! Posting at the exact same time as you, we stated the same solution!

I think it's just bomber, no cells. The cell-like look can be achieved by using the Lighten blending mode for particles.

This is rather an unusual application of HDR... if you love colors, and you love bright stuff, here's a filter. At the end of the entire filter, an HDR blend comes in to blow those highlights to the max, and beyond!

ALTHOUGH honestly, the main part of the filter is basically doable without the need of FilterForge 2 components. smile;) Just another small fun thing.

Dunno if anyone found this yet: the correct height when using variable 'Size' can be found by inputting the inverse 'Size' into 'Tint amount' and setting 'Tint mode' to 'Darken' (with 'Size chaos' set to 0 of course).

Sphinx, the fiber is nice. In fact, the you're getting close to my grass with that 2nd example.

Speaking of my grass, I thought since that came so easily, hair/fur would, too. However, I am having more difficulty with it. This is what I have so far.
