Any plans for this? Would be pretty essential in case we'd ever be aiming for using Groups as a snippet replacement in the far future, no?

Why not use Map Script as a place for comments?

Because it's an ugly, inelegant approach. Initially I wanted to introduce notes as a general mechanism that works with any components (notes attached to components, including groups) or without them (just free-floating notes), not just for groups per se. However, the need to describe grouped snippets never occurred to me. Built-in components have Help links for this purpose. Similarly, notes could be a property of a component, not just something attached to it. On the other hand, Groups are open and enterable, so it would make sense to include notes there (some would be attached to the group output component, some would be free-floating, some attached to group controls / inputs. However, with this approach it would be impossible to view notes before adding the group to the Editor canvas and going inside it. |

I like the idea of notes as a general mechanism that supports "attached" and "free-floating" states.
If we used this mechanism for comments inside Groups, then attaching a note to the group's output component could have a special effect: The note's text would be made visible outside the group, in the form of a pop-up hovering over the group component, for example. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

On the visibility of a note attached to the group out -- yes, this occurred to me as well.

Another idea:
The Map Group Result component is very similar to the Result component, since - essentially - Groups are simply (sub-)filters within the main filter. Therefore, one could imagine giving the Map Group Result its very own Group Controls area (similar to the Filter Controls) complete with Settings and About tabs. Naturally then, the About tab would get its content from a dedicated Edit Group Info... dialogue window. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

As an additional benefit, the Settings tab in the proposed Group Controls area would allow the editing of control values from within the group itself, which currently isn't possible...

Yup, that´s what I like most about the idea. Notes are nice too ofc
![]() Not having access to controls drives me mad with my current beast of a filter with too many controls and nested groups:D |

That was the original plan, but we dropped it because that would require venturing into a particularly messy part of the infrastructure (as if the code for groups isn't messy enough already). |

So this will be a limitation that we'll have to live with in FF 4.0?

I'm afraid yes, due to the sheer volume of the remaining bug-fixing work.
Groups are the second-biggest rewrite of FF codebase (the biggest one was the Mac version), so let's fix the bugs first and add convenience stuff later. |
