After downloading the Freepack3 collection of Frames filters, I double-clicked each of the three plugin files to install them in my Photoshop CS6 Plugins folder. With each double-click, Photoshop gave me a warning telling me that it "doesn't recognize this type of file."

Assuming that I'm not doing this correctly, please advise how to install Filter Forge plugins in Photoshop CS6.

(Hopefully Filter Forge developers will add a Help link to its pages that tell how to install Filter Forge filter plugins in a variety of applications. I wasn't able to locate such a hyperlink.)

What plugin files? The setup package comes in a single .dmg or .exe file — depending on your platform.

Thanks, GMM, for your prompt e-reply. (BTW: I'm a Mac user; OS 10.7.5, using PS CS6.)

The three plug-in files are in the Distortions folder. They are:

* Filter Forge Freepack 4 - Distortions ppc.plugin

* Filter Forge Freepack 4 - Distortions universal x86.plugin

* Filter Forge Freepack 4 - Distortions universal.plugin

If users are to do something different to get Photoshop to recognize and activate the Filter Forge plugins, please tell us how we are to do that. It's not an intuitive exercise for me; and the site doesn't (appear) to give the Help steps needed.

Thank you.

wcamp, please open Terminal and type this:

cd /Applications/Filter\ Forge\ Freepack\ 4\ -\ Distortions/
sudo ./InstallPlugins

InstallPlugins should report that "plugin installed successfully". Run PS CS6 and check if it helped.

Thanks, again, GMM.

I've entered the Terminal declaration; quit and restarted Photoshop CS6 twice; each time I saw nothing in the Filters submenu named Filter Forge.

What title should I look for? Where should I look for it? How do I activate Filter Forge in PS?

If Filter Forge still doesn't install as a plugin, please do the following:

1. Open the Filter Forge freepack folder in Applications
2. In another Finder window, open Applications > Adobe Photoshop CS6 > Plug-Ins > Filters.
3. Create an alias for the Filter Forge universal.plugin file in the Filters folder (drag and drop (Alt+Command+mouse) the Filter Forge universal.plugin file).

Hello, again, GMM. I've created and placed the alias file of the universal distortions plugin file in the PS6 Filters folder. I quit and retorted PS6 but do not see anything new in the drop-down submenus of the Filter menu.

Please tell me what FF file name I should look for and where it appears. It's possible that the plugin file has been loaded appropriately but I don't know how and where to activate it. Please tell me more.

Thanks.

Does Filter Forge work correctly for you in the standalone mode?

As far as I can determine, it does. I can edit photos according to the various plugin effcts available; the presets work as expected; and I can save edited image files.

I want to be able to install Filter Forge as a Photoshop CS6 plugin; hopewfully, it won't be too hard to figre out what's needed to accomplish that.

Thanks again for following through with my request, GMM.

Warren, I'm out of ideas. Using InstallPlugins or creating an alias manually has always helped...
You can try copying the entire "Filter Forge Freepack 4 - Distortions" folder into Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Plug-Ins/Filters.

Hello, again, GMM:

Before I copy/paste the folder(s), please tell me where in PS6 I'll find the Filter Forge activation link. Will I find it in PS6's Filters menu? In the Filters submenu? Somewhere else?

As I mentioned on Monday. "It's possible that the plugin file has been loaded appropriately but I don't know how and where to activate it."

Thanks, GMM.

Hello, again, GMM:

To be sure that I've done as you suggested, here's a screen shot of my Mac's pathway to the FF Distortions plugin file.

Please advise if I've loaded it appropriately.

Will I find it in PS6's Filters menu?

Yes, a new item should appear at the bottom of the Filter menu.
The path to the plugin file looks correct to me.

Have you tried installing a full FF version (not a freepack)?

Based on your latest e-reply, I opened a recent image in PS6 and clicked the Filters dropdown menu. Nothing with the name of "Filter Forge" appears, as shown in the attached screenshot. ( ;- (

No. I haven't installed anything but the the FF free pack assortments of Distortion, Frames, Metals, and Photo Effects.

Should that matter?

Will it work when the free pack doesn't?

You can also try the "preferences" menu in PS to choose the Filter Forge plugin folder to add...

Thanks, CFandM!

I appreciate your weighing in on this predicament. I followd your suggestion (done diffrently on a Mac) and it brought a smile to my face.

The good news: Finally, the Distortion plugin opened in PS6. I found it near the bottom of the Filters drop-down menu.

The bad news: When I repeated the process to add to that filter folder the FF Metals folder, I see only the Metals plugin from which to choose. ( ;- (

(See screen shot.)

For no apparent reason, PS6 stores only one additional plugin folder at a time. I tried again, carefully going through the Preferences process to add the FF Photo Effects folder. It added it but removed the previously added Metals pluging.

Might you know of a way to add more than one FF plugin to PS6?

Thanks!

Ok cool at least we now know that a plug-in will work.. smile;) smile:)
So now create a new empty folder and save it where you can find it.....Copy and paste the FF plug-ins for the distortions and then the metals freepack in there...
Now go through the preferences in Photoshop and choose that newly created folder as we just did above....Hopefully it will see both plugins now.. smile:)

If you move this folder you will have to go through the Photoshop preferences thing again....
Inside this newly created folder create a seperate folder for each plug-in and name it what ever the plug-ins name is..Such as the image below...

I assume that you suggesting that I create one folder with four FF plugins. Yes?

If so, do I select the "Filter Forge Freepack 4 - __________ universal.plugin" file for each group of filters?

Yes whatever files are in that certain folder for the plugin..Copy those and paste them into the newly created folders.....

Yes that would be one folder and inside that folder will be a separate folder for each plug-in...This way nothing will be overwritten by placing plug-ins on top of each other....Photoshop will hopefully see these plug-ins and load all in that folder....

Thanks, buddy!

Although the collection of files in four folders totals nearly 300 MB, PS6 did as I asked and loaded the four FF folders. I was able to sel ect one of four approaches fr om with Filter Forge and apply it and style to my PS image.

Many thanks to you and GMM!

Say: May I ask an unrelated question? Beneath your handsome Avatar, I clicked the "Filters: 214" hyperlink, which oped a huge collection of filter files. Are they available to people who only have the freepack installed? If not, how might I benefit by one or more of them?

Sincerely,

Warren

Glad to know your issue has been resolved.

Warren, freepacks are limited to a set of 7 fixed filters each – but they are completely free.
If you want to take advantage of 10,000+ library filters, including those 214 of CFandM, you can purchase a commercial version of Filter Forge.

Good deal...Cool that this method worked for you.....Now this will also serve as a folder for those plug-ins that do not like to install.. smile;) smile:) It also serves as a central location in case you want to manually install other plug-ins....CS6 is weird sometimes like that..........

As GMM said these work with the commercial version of FF...You can also grab a trial of FF and check them out.. smile;) smile:) Basically they work the same as the freepacks do...But there is a whole lot more of textures and photo-effects.. smile:)
