i was in Best Buy today and happened into the home theatre area of the store. now, i love the new led tv's and montitors so i was looking at some of the new, big ones there. the salesman naturally came around and i began talking to him about these. then, he mentioned they had some new 3d tv's. i told him i'd heard of these because when i moved the directv guy had mentioned that directv was going to be doing some 3d channels this fall. so, the salesman said that yes, directv already has 10 3d channels. so, naturally i had him give me a demonstration. holy crap! this thing is amazing! he showed me demos of sports, a 3d aquarium, and a musical rock band on stage.

now, this isnt animated 3d. it's 3d. real folks in real settings but 3d. it was really quite amazing. yes, you do need 3d glasses, but these are quite a bit different from the little paper glasses with colored lenses or even the clear ones. these are hard, black plastic and powered by a small battery.

the quality is exceptional. and, there is none of that sort of eye strain, give you a headache type effect with these. now, if you move your head around a lot or walk around a lot while watching you will get an odd parallax sort of effect that is a bit disconcerting but most of us dont do a lot of that while watching tv or a movie.

there were two different brands at the store and i highly recommend you check out the Samsung. i think the other was Sony. the samsung gave less of that disconcerting effect when you moved around and seemed to refresh faster than the other.

the prices are not out of the total realm of possibility, either. the samsung was around $2500 to $2600. this included two sets of glasses. i remarked to the salesman that tht seemed a bit cheap of the company to only include two sets; i mean, what about families with kids? he said the glasses were around $150 each and that was why.

all in all, this is an impressive system and display.

I have been trying my very hardest to say to myself that 3d is just a fad, but I have been saying that for about 3 years now, and it seems to not be going anywhere. I guess I should swallow my pride and start checking out some of the new technology and stop fighting the wave.

P.S. I can't believe I know what parallax means, I have come a long way since I first started using Filter Forge. I didn't even know what a diffuse or bump map was back then. smile:)

hi red,

yeah, i've seen and heard more about 3d stuff in the last 6 months than the rest of my life combined. i think it was Avatar that finally put it over the edge. it would seem that there are many more movies coming out in 3d now than ever before. i think the salesman said that there were 10 more movies in 3d coming out before christmas of this year. that's a lot of 3d.

hehe, it's not really a parallax shift. it's more of complete perspective shift. as you move right, the deeper objects move left to compensate. if you move left, then the deeper stuff goes right. it's a bit weird, sort of like when the eyes in a picture follow you as you move, but in 3d smile:) and yes, i feel the same way only mine were things like ambiient occlusion and normal maps smile:)

Well there was the Imax stuff but I would agree that it was Avatar...There were the movies before this but they IMHO did not really change the atmospheric condition of the experience...
Did come a long from this thou....

yes, movies like 'spy kids' or whatever that was and some of the animated ones were ok, but nothing that special. and there were others, but it's been within the last year that i've really noticed an increased proliferation of 3d movies and now with 3d tv it's only going to get more so.

i watched a number of demos at the store and on two different systems. if you get the chance, watch the sports one and i think it was the 'black eyed peas' band and then the 3d aquarium. all three were pretty cool smile:)

i dont remember 'Time Traveler'. you old folks are always pulling these dated things out of your hats smile;) smile:dgrin:

I was at the Autodesk showroom at 1 Market street LINK a few months ago and they had an honest - to - god no glasses 3d tv. It was running a simple 3d simulation of a helicopter flying over some trees. Apparently was using high def pixels to include multiple viewpoints. It was sort of low framerate, and had a definite 'sweet spot', but I was impressed anyway. It's like living in the future!

Next I want an all knowing computer brain that knows everything.
(quick, let me google that... smile:) )

I missed Avatar special edition smile:cry:

3D TV may be cute, but what we really need is 3D computer screens. Will be sooooo good to have depth perception when modelling, much better use for a 3D screen than watching telly programs.
