I noticed a trend with these things and thought it would be really helpful to start my own.
Here's some of my experiments with another sci-fi paneling. I started a project long long ago using photoshop to generate something like this. It got abandoned and I figured I'd recreate it using filterforge. I'd still like to add some options for cross bars like train trusses. Right now the only options I can provide toggle the sides or corners. The inner texture is pretty goofy and mostly a placeholder |

This filter actually was the precursor to the above. It's mostly just some stuff I was playing around with. I found a great way to get a quick and beautiful metal.
Color control -> Noise Gradient (crank down the LSH sliders) -> Noise Distortion 100% distort and high roughness. Voila! You've instantly got the effect you see in the background of this one. If you tone down the colors enough and stretch it a bit you can get a nice metal as seen in the first two featured. ![]() |

This is another filter I made to simulate a shaft. It's actually quite different from my gunbarrel filter though they look similar. One shared feature is the scratches. Despite what you would expect the scratches aren't actual featured in the height map. It's not the ideal situation obviously but it looks quite nice using the little photoshop trick I ported over to filterforge. Feel free to open up the gunbarrel and take a look at how I did the scratches if it helps.

Here's that tile thing if anyone wants to have a peek.
I didn't attach the above filters because I'll probably submit them eventually once I'm happy with them, any suggestions? Newtiles Backup.ffxml |

I was bored in computer lab one time so I downloaded filterforge installed the demo and did up this number in about 10 minutes. It's not bad for such a quick effort, slow despite the small number of components mostly because of the highpass directly after the noise. (The ultimate speed killer) Check out my "boulderdash" filter if you want a real legit rock filter.

Okay so now for some feedback from you guys
![]() and some random thoughts! <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< I wanted to do a carbon fiber filter but noticed that someone already made one that's pretty sweet. He's already gotten high usage out of it, do you think the filterforge world could use another attempt? <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< carl's recent grunge frame filter has an AMAZING look about 3 steps down from the frame component. I might mimic that and do something that creates simulated paint drool/spatter from a painted line. (btw, the whole filter is amazing, I just really like that one part ![]() <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< I had the crazy idea earlier today to make a filterforge filter that took a texture with SEAMS and did it's best job to automatically fix the seams. Basically you could take an image of dirt or something and feed it into ff and come out with a texture that tiles. Here's how one might do it in photoshop: http://www.cadtutor.net/dd/photo/seam...mless.html The nice thing with doing it this way is that we can make use of filters like this: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/226.html or this: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/4448.html to transform filterforge into a seam removing wonder! It's too late for me to start attempting this yet but I'll try and find a way to grab parts of the image and paste them over the seam (similar to the "clone tool" in photoshop) I really hope to get something working for this, it should be pretty amazing if done right (and with multiple methods of removing seams!) |

ya know, CF, that gives me another idea. what if you had a scanner and could feed real world textures into the scanner such that it would scan and capture your image/texture into the computer and then, if you had a filter, FF or something else, that would read that texture/image and create an FF like filter of it? it would be sort of like those automatic paint sampling/creating machines where you run the color you want under a scanner and the machine mixes the proper colored paint. how slick would that be?
![]() in other words, let's say i took a picture of some dirt. or, i had a way to simple scan a piece of dirt, and i took either of those and fed them into the computer. i'd run my program and the program would create a filter matching and simulating that patch of scanned dirt. you could program it for high random variables or very tight parameters. how much do you think Sign Guy and others might pay for such a beast? ![]() actually, the simplest scanner would be a digital camera these days. no need for new hardware there. so, it would be the programming that would be the trick. i wonder if FF couldnt come close to this. if you ran a separation routine and.... hmmm... i'll get back to you ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Btw I get these photos from cgtexture.com it's an amazing resource.
Kraellin I think a project like your idea might be a bit out of the scope of filterforge, but I did once find a company that did something similar. It was pretty amazing technology, I'll link to it if I ever find it. Attached my shoddy attempt if anyone was curious. CFandM's got me beat straight out on that. I'm glad someone else found it and has made good use (the High usage despite low dl's) KG Seamless Tile.ffxml |

Wewt- First HU!
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/5204.html I'm really surprised it was this one, it's got the most flaws out of any of my others atm. It has a vertical tiling issue and doesn't use the best stripe generation method my other one does: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/5203.html Pretty awesome either way though- thanks Filterforge users! 1/5'th the way to my goal! |

nice. always fun getting those HU's. but, this one doesnt surprise me. this is a very common texture for gaming, especially some of the games of late, like doom 3 and so on. grunge and industrial markers... makes sense

Top dollar for sure. Actually, there's a freeware product out there named Quick Tile that uses a similar approach as CFandM used. Some images work great, most require some Photoshopping, and some just won't lend themselves to it. Here's one that came out well with only a couple of touched up spots. The sauce hides some flaws. ![]() The other approach is the one that Uberzev is taking with his Real Bomber filter ... if he ever finds the time to finish it. With it, one can use a silhouetted image to create random repetition and have it tile. Then if you feed it multiple images, the possibilities for seamless textures generated from photographic or computer generated graphics are infinite. Both would have many uses. Fred Weiss

OFC! I'll release all of these eventually. I have a bad habit of just making a filter real quick and never even adding controls (let alone tweaking them for good randomization). Then I've gotta make a quick preview mode... do presets... write witty comments... sigh. So much work-

Bridge Girders Metal Columns and I beams w/ and w/o rivets hex bolts asphalt some more strata rock (Boulderdash can be improved upon) stair steps brick with quoin (option for a plain bombin brick filter too- use dmg from block filter) scratches, rusty corrosion, dripping oil spouts Metal grate Update Carl's concrete filters because he won't do them ![]() Bulletholes filter too (Double wink) any other ideas? |

Yup. That's the general theme we are going with for the videogame. It's departed from the really victorian style to more of a general "grunge" feel, but we're keeping the basics similar.

Yep, had a peek at your web site, and wow them images look really good. At first I thought I was looking at photo's of a warehouse! Then I thought hold on whats that blue glowing thing.. don't get many of them in real life warehouses. So I looked closer and realised it's computer image.
What gene of videogame are you making? Just I love RPG style/adventure. Not keen on doom type though. Idea's to add to your list? Man hole coverings Asphalt with/with out lines Drain pipes/guttering broken/cracked concrete Corrugated metal/plastic with/without rust/bird droppings etc um.. mind has just emptied of all thought If I think of anything else will add it Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)

Crap... it DOES look more like a cargo container than it does a column
![]() I'll have to resubmit it sometime with a more traditional looking white column. Oh well, at least I've got a solid starting point for making a cargo container (great texture idea!) I also submitted 2 other filters ![]() |
