When doing larger renders in FF, I get over a gig in PF Usage going on, which is more than I recall well ever seeing before. Is that remedied simply by adding more ram, (I only have 1gig of ram currently), and if so, will that also speed up the renders some ?

Adding ram won't speed up the rendering but it may help in the Pf usage...For faster rendering it always helps to get a faster processor...Dual Cores help.. smile:)

----Yeah, dualcore is on the list, unfortunately, that also requires new mobo, new DDR2 ram, new graphics card, new heatsink/fan, and a larger power supply as well, so it goes from what sounds like $149, to about $600 fast once ya add up all the parts required to "upgrade" to a dualcore. So obviously, I am still looking for ways to get more performance out of what I already have before commiting that much money to it. smile:D

I tried a dualcore Celeron 1.8Ghz laptop today, no better than my P4 2.4Ghz (single core of course) desktop. Hoping to try a $1099 (just for the chip) no limit dualcore 'extreme' Intel on Saturday, that gamer/pawn shop co-owner guy wants to impress me with his 4.1Ghz quad-performance dualcore chip ha-ha. smile:D He's quoting me about $650 (including labor for transferring my parts/case) for an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700. Which is about $150 more than my non-budget was allowing, but he's willing to underclock his system to show me what it can do for renders this weekend. I left him frowning and scratching his head at one of my FF filters that crippled his cheesy dualcore laptop, it sat for 15 minutes without rendering one square ha-ha smile:p

what you really want is one of the new macs coming out with a 75 gig ram harddrive and 75 gigs of ram. yes, the 'harddrive' is actually flash memory, 75 gigs worth smile:)

Kraellin,

Wow, 75 GB ram sounds crazy impressive. Where did you hear this? Can you lead me to any internet links that mentions/talks about this? (Also I don't know much about what "flash memory" means -- just a vague understanding...)

hi ssamm,

no, i cant lead you to any links. i heard this from a retail sales guy who works at a computer store where they sell Macs. so, this is all hearsay, nothing concrete i can point you at.

and flash memory is the type of memory that holds data even when powered down. you 'flash' it into the memory (load it) and the chip retains it until changed. this is the type of memory that a digital camera uses or one of those thumbdrives or flashsticks. it's just a memory chip type that retains what's loaded into it as opposed to chips that dont retain the data when there is no power left.
