I'm looking at upgrading to a dualcore soon, and am wondering if there is any reason FF-wise, to soak extra dollars into a better (over $49) graphics card, ie = will it speed up render times at all, and if so, by about how much, and what kind of overkill videocard are we talking about ? Obviously, I'd rather put the extra $50-$100 into more cpu power or rent ha-ha, so I'll risk sounding fairly ignorant about 2-D graphics like this, and videocards (not much of a risk, as I am almost completely ignorant of videocards not being a gamer or tivo person).

some where onyx or one of the others, answered that saying it's only your cpu that effects rendering time

No, the GPU does not contribute to FF render performance in any way (although I remember one of the devs mentioning that this might change sometime in the distant future). --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Cool, thanks C & C, I did a forum search but didn't find any info. I'll plan on just getting an el cheapo graphics card for now then.

a decent graphics card can help, but not in rendering time per se. the cpu does almost all of that. but, if you go with a pci-e card, the flow between computer components was re-worked with that technology upgrade (the pci-e) and you will see slightly faster results... or shld. but, it wont be from a truly faster render, it will simply be from a faster displaying of information.
think of it this way, the cpu is making two or three billion calculations per second. if your pipelines from cpu to vid card cant handle the speed of those calculations, the information wont be displayed as quickly. the pci-e cards re-worked the flow and busses involved and sped that part of the process up. so, you can see an apparent increase in rendering times. just remember, it's apparent, not actual. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
