well, i broke down and bought a new printer for my home. it's an HP Photosmart D7260. and so far, i'm impressed. the colors are amazing and the duplication of color from monitor to print is excellent. that's printing on glossy paper. but even printing on plain, white typing paper is pretty good. the box promised 'lab quality', which i always take with a BIG grain of salt. and the salesman told me this was the one he'd bought and that it beat their own $500 printers, or at least did as well. so far, i'm believing the salesman. the prints are stellar!

to make it even better, the printer uses a new ink. you know how those home printer cartridges cost like $24 to $35 or so? this one uses six cartridges and the total cost for all six is $35! combine that with the print quality and well, i'm willing to write up a glowing report here in the forums.

i havent tested this yet, but the salesman also said that one set of cartridges shld do 100 to 150 prints. i'm not sure if he meant 4 x 6 or 8 1/2 x 11.

there are a couple of drawbacks. it's not compatible with win98 and prior and the max print size is 8 1/2 x 11.

but, it has all the standard features of a new printer, card readers, usb thumbdrive reader, a decent sized lcd touch screen with a fairly extensive menu system. it will accept 8 1/2 by 11 papers down to 4 x 6. the installation was simple and bug free so far as i can tell and it came with a few extras HP tends to always throw in.

for $150 retail this is looking pretty damn good!

I remember that you live quite aways away from the nearest print place.....so with gas so expensive, it should quickly pay for itself smile;) smile:)

well, to me, just being able to print at home again has justified the expense. the stuff i'm printing out now puts all my earlier work to shame. and i'm not even printing from photoshop and not even watching gamuts and that sort of thing. the color match is pretty incredible. even printing on plain white paper is pretty impressive, but put it on glossy photo paper and wow! if i could find an oversized printer that would print at least a 24 x 36 and give this kind of quality, i'd hock the house instantly!

I recent got a new printer to go with the new computer smile;) smile:) but seemed to have made one mistake - sure it prints reasonable cleanly [ borderless ] - colour not bad - but because we wanted to run it from two computers I got wireless - aaghhh nightmare - it works through the internet router believe it or not when the internets down so the communication for the printer - one or other computer can't communicate with it off and on - had a technician here for 3 and half hour to get it to work properly - yeah it worked in the end till we turned on the computers the next day now neither computer works with it now smile:cry: they have replaced it 3 times yes three times cause once the ip address is put in it locked in [ goes back to factory ] - it acquires it automatically but it somehow was picking up the wrong ip. Interestingly we were using refills on the last printer and found out the hard way that you should only refill once or twice and then chuck em as they ruined the head through a lack of proper vacuum as the cartridges wear or aren't seal to the same level [ I'm not very technical so this is all what I've been told ] smile:(

Sound like I should have got an Hp smile;) smile:)
