Looks like Synthetik has just put up StudioArtist 5.0.
Basically it's a AI-driven, odd-ball painting program that ignores traditional "painting software" paradigms. It can do pretty crazy stuff but also can do regular painting as well. New version includes 64bit build for Mac which is nice. ![]() If anything I use this program quite often for my own work: http://skybase.xyz/SideTrip I'm thrilled to see this update! https://synthetik.com/ |

Thanks very much for the awesome and wonderful news, I have been waiting for this since 4 YEARS ago as I personally did not like how it was done version 4.0, and now I will test the new 5.0 to see how is done and how it works
What I did not like on version 4.0 was the interface and how it was done the presets and the tiny mini thumbnails and other things that I as starter did not understand about it I wish all the best for the new 5.0 version that has taken so long to be available AND what is more important and interesting is that there is still 50% DISCOUNT SPECIAL OFFER So if any of you want to buy it do it now at the special price |

I was dazzled by the examples and videos on the Synthetik website. This software has come a long way since I installed a trial version a couple of years ago.
Tempted by the 50% discount offer, I installed the free trial, but it crashes constantly. I can try out a couple of presets on the sample images before it crashes, but it usually crashes immediately if I try to load an image of my own. I've tried different sizes of images (from smaller than the sample images to slightly larger), but the software seems to only want to use its own sample images. In comparison, the less expensive (but of course with a smaller feature set) Dynamic Auto Painter will take any image I give it and never crashes. I am wondering how others are faring with Studio Artist (under Windows 10). EDIT: I figured out why the program was crashing immediately upon loading non-sample images. The software can't deal with image or path names containing non-latin characters. Not trying to load such images reduces the number of crashes considerably. |

It's their initial release after a long, closed beta period. You should contact support over the issue and give them a heads up on the trouble so others in the future don't have to go through the frustration you did. It barely crashes for me over here.

Actually, when I ran into the problem I scoured the Synthetik website and it turns out that the inability to load images that have non-latin characters is a known issue:
"There is also an issue with the way Studio Artist currently imports images files, where the file name and complete pathname associated with it needs to be all latin characters. This could be an issue for some of our European users (like Russia for example). The fix for this issue is to make sure that the complete pathname associated with the image is composed of latin letters only. This issue is associated with the quicktime api calls used to import images. Hopefully we can address it in a future release, but it's something to be aware of right now." Unfortunately, I have thousands of files exported from my camera that are in a format with an underscore, and most of my folder names contain underscores. So although the problem is not insurmountable, I can't be bothered change the name or path of every image I want to play around with with this software. |

Well that sucks. heh there's barely anything that can be done other than to traverse all files with some batch renamer and change them all somehow.
[Edit] This whole thing with characters is kinda like an industry-wide issue. For example, I tend to use AfterEffects and once in a while I get clients sending me AfterEffects files with Japanese variables. This is a real mess because I like to use the english version of AE and most often variables come corrupted so I usually have to manually resolve all issues. It happens in 3D where a friend might write some code in python in the english version of Maya, but my company might be using Japanese and hence just having Japanese characters breaks the code. Very very common issue, and sometimes it's really just nitty gritty. So it's sad to hear it doesn't work for you. |

Edit
The "new regionization effects" in SA that I was hoping would surpass Genetica's "regions" unfortunately do not. It would be nice to have access to the underlying code in the preset settings. _____________________________________________________

It's a completely different mentality from Genetica, but you can use regions to your effect and in fact may perform something like Genetica's region effects to some extent especially combined with the paint synthesizer classic. While genetica poses more as a texturing utility, SA5 is a painting tool, and something that pumps serendipity out.
This being said I think region recognition in SA5 is kinda bold and different from anything I've ever used. It's comfortably different and manages to be some of the most unique applications on the planet. |

I took the plunge and got SA 5 at 50% off. It is quite amazing and a different approach. I like the vector tools. I have played with some of the presets. I will start looking at the tutorials this weekend. From what I can see so far it will be a highly useful tool & painter.

Studio Artist 5.0 is on sale again for 50% off plus a further 15% through November 26 if you use the code BFRIDAY15OFF.
I downloaded the trial version again to see if anything had changed, and it now seems possible for me to load images from my local drive that have paths which contain non-latin characters. Nevertheless, the program is still not very stable and it freezes very frequently, even though I have a new graphics card and a new SSD drive. I really like some of the effects that this program can achieve but even at the discounted price, I won't be purchasing it. One thing that bothers me is how the program distorts images in portrait format by stretching them horizontally to fit the canvas. I am sure the canvas can be changed to fit the image, but I expect such an expensive program to provide some comfort out-of-the-box. |

Contact support on that, they usually respond quickly especially if you're running into a bunch of problems like that.
In regards to the portrait mode thing you got going, you want to modify the image initially before putting it into StudioArtist. The program wasn't designed to be like photoshop at all. StudioArtist at times can be pretty frustrating but I think it has its own workflow. It does not behave like your everyday tools what so ever in many instances. |
