Ah, cg modeling.....definitely can do that in TS and Blender.....TS being alot easier than Blender to learn......which is the biggest gripe I've found about Blender.....help is not very good.....have to go to You-Tube where there are alot of good video tutorials available from users.....

it would be nice if we were all on the same page with something like TrueSpace and Blender.....learning them together.....and maybe even getting together on collaborations

I used to feel the same way but I have since realized that to do a single high quality project you need people that specialize. Take the scene from King Kong were he throws a tantrum. How long would it take you to create the King Kong model? Then it has to be rigged and deformations applied. How long would that process take? How long do you think it would take you to animate his 3 minute rampage? The scene involves an environment with practical effects as well as live footage of a real human. There are backgrounds that have to be modeled, painted or otherwise generated. There are camera movements, lens selection, depth of field and focus issues. All of these visual elements then have to be composited together. And don't forget all that goes into the sounds and score. If we all concentrate on learning the same things at the same time we will not be able to work together on a single project. The only way for that to work is for each of us to pick an area and get good at it while collaborating on the larger vision. If you were to specialize in rendering, Carl in displacement and textures, Beliria in environments and matte painting and Nidi in Python and setup and then we could get someone to help with animation, compositing, dynamics and sound – we might have a small chance of completing a project. So I think we should all get started. smile:)

I even forgot to mention texturing, rendering and dynamics used for the King Kong scene smile:|

Ron, you're certainly right about dividing the labor in a project of that magnitude. I was kinda thinking of starting out on a smaller scale.....like just developing a themed set/group of characters together.....then see if we could sell them. Maybe after we got some good ones, it could be progressed into animation. What do you think??? smile:)

um.. looking at that SL wiki list for what 3d software can be 'easily' turned in to sculpties might take me a while to find software that I can figure out lol! as to OBJ can't seem to find the right one to convert them, tried to open the xeno ones in Blender and it freaked out. Although have managed to open the obj's in Bryce..

Why thank you so much Ron for the job offer in your new company smile;) I like very much enthusiastic people, you know... I'm sure many of us, here, are making this as a hobby or for a few bucks, or both, or maybe real pros indeed... I've just decided to develop my right brain hemisphere, to unleash the hidden artist within me. Of course, i'm sure will take about 100 years till i'll be able to create in a 3d program something that will not be so "abstract" smile:) Python... yes... sometime of course...i suppose such a language, a scripting language, takes between 1 and 3 months to be mastered by an average programmer...

In the short term, everything is clear. I need a body of work. For now, producing something, anything, has my complete attention. But on down the road things get a little more schizophrenic. I have imagined a world in my head but there is no story in it. It is populated only by facts and ideas. It is a good place from which to pull characters for modeling but it also draws a bright line under my inability to tell a story of my own. I am better suited and would genuinely enjoy making a small but significant contribution to someone else's vision.

One of the thing that irrates me in a lot of games is lack of a real story line or worse still claiming to have a clever story line where when you play it the story is irrelevant to advancing through the game smile:evil:

What do you mean? Usually the story is just, take that hill or win the race. Even with a good RPG the story is, fight your way to the boss monster and defeat it.

They have a long way to go. I have heard game makers claim that they are making art but IMO they haven't earned it yet.
A game company is sixteen dipshits in cubicles. The 3 minute scene in King Kong took hundreds of people months of work.

I like the story in the movie 'Groundhog Day'. The character learns the difference between getting what he wants and earning what he gets. Game designers need to watch that movie.
I also like a good revenge story.

In general, I like adventure games, that some of them have great storylines (see The Longest Journey or Myst) but there are action games also with good storylines, like Beyond the good and evil...

I love rpg games but I agree to the lack of story a lot of the online style seem to be based on kill the creatures or kill each other. I don't mind killing the critters, as to killing each other not to keen on that.

The Right Brain vs Left Brain Test ... Do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction, see if you can do it.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking
