Maya cannot do a scene like that by itself but it can make a large contribution.

Thank you for the kind offer.....I appreciate that!!! smile:) I wouldn't want to waste your time knowing that I wouldn't use it like that. I wish that they would do something else besides stamping the work area.....but then again, people would be using things like screen capture programs to get around it.....

Good one, Craig......"You may not pass!!!" smile8)

Hey, does Blender have any advantages over TrueSpace??? It looks to me like TS can do what Blender does.....but could be wrong.....

Read reviews that say that Blender is harder to learn than TS.....

Ron, I noticed that Blender uses Python..... smile:devil:

One more question, then I'll shut up.....what are the advantages and disadvantages of Python.....and what other programs use it??? Okay, I lied.....two questions.... smile;) smile:D

The hard part for me has not been Maya. It has been getting my mind around 3d. With your background in AutoCad you will be better prepared.

The advantage of Python over Maya's scripting language (mel) is that Python is more widely used. I do not know of any disadvantages to someone that knows neither.

I'm very interested in these tools....and which ones not to waste any energy on if they are covered by another..... smile;) smile:)

Well, in AutoCad, it's all working with the straight xyz coordinate sytem.....but in TS, you can model by manually pushing, pulling, and smoothing things like you are working clay with your hands. I'm not used to that type of "freestyle" approach, but it does have the option to work with the 3d coordinate system as well.....

I'm also surprised that TS has a full compliment of 3D modeling tools.....and quite a few that AutoCad 3D doesn't have.....but I can easily create them if I wanted to.....

I'm still looking into the possibility of 'linking' AutoCad to TS.....would be so sweet to bypass the conversion without any loss of data..... smile:devil:

In regard to Blender.....I read that it lacks good help and tutorials......and that you can go to TouTube and get some user video tutorials that are pretty good. All in all, people say that blender has a steep learning curve......which is why I'm hesitant to look at it if it is covered by TS.....

I also compared prices for V-Ray between the different apps.....V-Ray for TS is $299.....while being much more expensive for everything else. I'm kinda wondering why that is.....maybe because it's "stripped down" to work with the more simplified TS program..... smile:|

I'm just learning about all this stuff.....seeing what V-Ray can do is like opening up a whole new world to me.....like I've been "trapped in time" forever working with AutoCad and Microstation 2D and 3D with only native lighting..... smile:cry:

it's damned impressive! i sat immobilized through most of that scene, just awestruck! i've got all 3 movies on dvd and regularly review them for the effects. that entire production was true masterly work. peter jackson is to be commended over and over and over and i dont care if he started ww iii; i'd still commend him for making those movies what they are. the technical brilliance, the detail, the absolute slendor and realism was just spellbinding. the Rivendell scenery was amazing. the masses of orcs and uru' kai, just freaking brilliant! no other movie in history has come close to all the amazing theatrics done in the peter jackson version of that movie! the entire thing was a true work of art.

ah! that's good to know. that's about the only 3d experience i have is that type of modeling and that was only with fairly simple objects in the wolfenstein editor. i may have to try true space out.

btw steve, python is used on web pages, often those using sql and it's also become very common in game files, especially game files designed to be modded by players.

and i'm with steve, bel. that 2nd one is cool, although the last one is pretty cool too.

Great!!! smile:) I've got a couple freinds to start checking it out and they love it....because it's an easy-to-learn, cost-effective (free) way to get professional results.....and they are enjoying the help and collaborative up-beat air of the people in the forum.....

I've been trying to get you, Bel, Carl, and Ron to check it out. I thought it would be nice to learn it together with you guys.....and maybe even use it to do some "collaborations" down the road.....since it's highly unlikely that any of us will be able to afford/justify the expense of Maya, 3ds max, etc any time soon..... smile:)

Yeah, it is......download the ts_76 manual and the video tutorials that go with it.....and then there are tons more video tutorials/courses that you can view from Caligari website.....

http://www.caligari.com/

PS..... If you get the chance, check out their elaborate forum and their monthly contests.....

PSS..... They are really "fast-tracking" that program and everything that goes with it......which is an additional draw to me....

The new images look great Beliria. Are you using fractals to create them? What did you use for the background on the second image? That would make a nice FF effect.

I think the approach to take would be to use concentric spheres with alpha masks rather than model it with geometry. Same with the pinwheel - I think I would just warp a plain and apply an alpha mask to its shader. The spring could be a simple extrude to path.

No clue, is just easy to read web site forums and keep an eye on the rendering lol!

ooh if you mean can I stop and start the render time I can, there's a button but I have to be careful if I don't pay attention I accidentally hit start again from scratch, not the resume render button, which is a major ouch!
