great pics on the 3d stuff. that house and those women look great! but, $5000 for maya? ouch! then again, if that's what made the orcs and balrogs and flaming head, then i suppose it's worth it if you're in the industry.

i wonder if terragen and true space would play together? and what of Blender? it's a freebie still, isnt it?

Hey I'm won over. For hard surface modeling, things like architecture and cars, trueSpace stands toe to toe with Maya. Unless I learn something new it would be impossible to justify the cost of Maya when free, or dramatically cheaper, software is available that will do the same thing. On the other hand, Maya's PLE is also free, it is stable and there is a lot of training available for it.
I may end up doing cg stills, or even games or web graphics, or flipping burgers but that is not my goal. As long as I have an option I'm going to keep my eye on balrog.

I finally bit the bullet and clicked on buy. Selecting the rendering/lighting/texturing training DVDs has been the most difficult purchase I have ever made. The problem with buying training DVDs is that by definition it is something I know nothing about. If I knew enough to make a smart purchase then I would not need training DVDs. I decided to go with a company called Digital Tutors. Here are the titles I selected.

The biggest problem I had with Digital Tutors was the cover of their modeling humans DVD. Look how crappy the model looks. What's up with that? Why would anyone aspire to create a model that looked like that? The took a pretty girl and turned her into some kind of cg freakshow. smile:|

I do not see why anything would not be node based. The old file drawer paradigm sucks. Tabs were a big improvement but nodes are far better.

I think with organic modeling that it is really more a question of the artist and how much he/she wants to put in to it. Do you know if V-Ray has things like subsurface scattering and caustics?

Where it says 'Fully customizable interface' I know that the Maya interface is fully customizable. In face the existing interface was written with the same mel script that is available to customize it with. So they are not being accurate with that one.

It would take a long time to explain. There are many ways to gain access to the various nodes. There are also lots of ways to connect them.
