Ok, Tabula Rasa is both an RPG style sci-fi and it is in 3rd person (may have option in-game for 1st person though) It ships out by Oct 17, around the same time NWN2's MoTB comes out, but I ordered it anyway so I can play 2 types of RPGs, the fantasy dungeon & drangon style and a sci-fi one.

If anyone is interested you can pre-order it at Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000...78-2349516

At the moment I'm going to try something I'm downloading right now. It's called Dungeon Runners, is a FREE Online game and looks fairly nice. At least it will give me something else to do while waiting for my other ones to come out smile:)
You can check it out here:

Foxxee, maybe there is a game that we could all purchase which wopuld allow us to play together online without a monthly fee. Most games are around $50 each.....some more elaborate ones are more.....but it would be much cheaper as a one-time expense.....

You are right about "Tabula Rasa".....it does have a first and third person option.....

the dungeon runners one looks promising, jan. that is a fairly new genre i've been seeing more of lately:

Dungeon Runners will always be free to download and play, however, choose to become a member* and you’ll have access to the most powerful in-game items and a growing list of members-only privileges.
i played a sci-fi one of these lately and it was ok. it got a bit tedious and repetitive but still some fun. i might try this one out.

typically, that type of game is quite playable for free. the best stuff does come to those who use the pay for aspect and some do a sort of credits thing. the more you pay, the more extended time you get or the more 'dollars' in the game you get and other such perks. so, the main game is sort of a loss-leader and they use the perks as enticements to get you to do the pay-for stuff. it seems to work pretty well. it's also a very good way to see if you really like the game. the free part works as a pretty good demo and if you like the demo, then get the pay-for stuff.

Is there one with elaborate customization of characters, enticing team strategies, audio to talk to each other, etc.... I think "World of Warcraft" is like that.....but are there any others???

Craig, did you check this out??? If you haven't, watch the whole thing past the promo to the "Armored Core: Last Raven" mech battle (maximize screen when it starts.....or you can start it, cancel it, and start it a second time to skip the Animie promo and begin with the mech battle). I can't wait until gameplay is like this sometime in the future.....might not be far off......

'Tabula Rasa' is definitely on my list of "To Play". YOu pay once and play forever as the world economy goes on even while you are logged out. If you have checked out the video downloads for this game where the creator talks about the game style and growth it sounds very promising and long lasting. Being it has RPG style play in a Sci-Fi world is very appealing to me too. It's by the same makers as 'Guild Wars' and I only had to pay for the CD and can still re-enter any time I want and pick up where my character left off 6 months ago smile:D

I spent all night and this morning (about 5 hours straight) playing Dungeon Runner alone, and it is something that I will play but not sure to pay for extra goodies. So far my character has advanced to Level 7 and is still going good (died only 1 time so far smile:-p )

Haven't played any sci-fi games of this type but you are right, it's perfect to test play and if you like it you can pay the small fee for the perks. I'm not sure I will do that thouhg, if 'Tabula Rasa' is as expansive and deep as it seems it's going to be, and we don't have to pay a monthy to play whenever we want for however long we want, I'm going to save my money for future expansions on this and NWN2 I think smile:)

Yep, "Tabula Rasa"! They have a system set up for playing and talking to each other without having to stop and use your hands to talk. I am not sure what all that will be... headset? But then if that's the case it will be even more immersive, will fit the style of the game we'd all be playing smile:D

I think you would enjoy this one too, Manon... what is too small to see? You can (and I have) increase the text in the chat and make it more opaque rather than so transparent by going into the game's Options/Graphics set up. You can also remap your keys for doing things such as moving and fighting. I use my mouse to fight and steer my little ranger while I use the arrow keys to make her move and turn. You could give it a try anyway... play alone for awhile and get a good feel for it. Later you can join up at the town gathering place and group, then all head out to do the quests in a generated dungeon just for yourself or your group you are with. No fighting off silly pvp players. Also, you can turn World Chat off so you don't hear eveyrone chattering away, go into Group Chat mode, and you can set your character to Busy (which I did) to keep others from asking to join with you or talk to you. I like to start out without any distractions so I get a good feel for the game first smile;)

The character that you would play you say are too small?
There is a zoom camera and you can adjust the eye-level as well, close to her back and ground level or birds-eye view and far off. The things jumping at the character, I'm not sure what you mean by that... the enemies are a good size too, not at all difficult for me to see from the viewpoint I have my game set up.

Here's a pic for you if this helps give you an idea of the size of things as I play them...not in window mode, but full screen:

Hey Jan, Manon, Craig, and Carl smile:) I think that I actually like "Guild Wars" better because of the character customization and development.....as well as the style of team/group play. Does it have the same real-time audio so we can talk to each other as we play like Tabula Rasa???

Bottom line is that we all have to like it.....might be difficult, but not impossible.....so Manon, put that baby down and get your ass back here smile;) smile:D LOL....

Like I've been trying to tell you, Steve, Tabula Rasa is made and plays by the same folks who made Guild Wars... so you will get the same setup in this game, which has both rpg elements and sci-fi story line in it. It's coming out Oct. 17 so I'll be playing that when it does, or if NWN2 comes out first... or both smile:-p

Something else I just found out about Tabula Rasa is that you get to clone your character at any time in the game. Same last name but have to give him/her a new first name, can change your sex (not my style thank you) and then retain all the same traits and skills and xps but now you can choose an entirely different profession if you want. The game branches off in the career abilities quite a bit so there's a lot to choose from smile;)

yes, it was one of the tuts in pdf format that i got off one of the sites. laid it out nicely. so, now i'm replacing all those placed critters with spawn points. much cleaner and makes for a smaller file size as well. i've also gotten the spawns to repeat now as well. there are quite a few settings for randomizing things so that the spawnings dont get too predictable.

and steve, yes, WoW (world of warcraft) is pretty much the biggie in mmorpg's right now. but, i'm just not going to do a pay-for. i've done that for years and spent way too much on those and not going to get hooked again. did you ever see the spoof that that animation cartoon did on WoW? (that show where 'oh my god, they killed kenny!' is one of the running gags). it was hilarious smile:)

I don't think anyone else wants to pay-to-play either....but I thought the concept was pretty amazing.....very interesting and fun.....excellent character development.....sense of community.....working together as a team and with others.....audio communications.....social aspects with ourselves and others playing the game.....etc. On the downside, it looks pretty damn addictive!!! smile;) smile:D

What would be the next best thing to something like WoW that wouldn't have a monthly fee???

I like the 'communications' aspects of Jan's 'Tabula Rasa'.....but I'm not thrilled with the gameplay and lack of character customization, options, and development. The gameplay seems too confined and busy.....and looks like coops would be mass confusion. If this is the next best thing to WoW without a monthy fee, then so be it....I'm willing to give it a try.....

Oh, I don't know how everyone feels about this, but how about a strategy game without characters???

one of the nice things about NWN 2 is that it is highly moddable. that means the users are in there creating with the thing, and that always produces some interesting results. it also means an ever expanding universe, even if it is a bit disjointed at times. and like i told jan, i'm now working on a module, learning the toolset so we do our own universe, which could easily be full of FF textures and 3d models of our own making. from what little i've read so far, the toolset even allows for making your own critters and i've seen one mod out that added three new races that players can play. so, that's where my interest is right now.

the game sells for $30 now at most any place that sells computer games and you could probably even find it cheaper somewhere. so the cost is quite reasonable. and i've seen quite a few 'persistent worlds' up online, which are the user made universes that stay there all the time. character advancement through levels and classes is also very customizable, with being able to multi-class and or even quad-class. the only limit i've seen on that so far is that you seem to be able to go to about level 20 (total of all your class levels) and that's it. i'm guessing they did this on purpose to allow room to grow in their expansion packs, one of which jan says is coming out in october.

i also have seen where folks are customizing more than just characters and classes and the universe. i think they are also customizing parts of the actual engine, though i'm not real sure of that. i do know that the NWN 2 was made specifically with modding in mind. there are even a directories that are named 'override' and 'modules' and maybe a couple others like that that just smack of customizing.

the graphics are decent, the sound is decent, you can only play 3rd person, which i personally dont really like, but it's ok. i'm more interested in making the game than in playing it all that much smile:)

so, again, NWN 2 is where i'm putting my current efforts. i'm not quite up to allowing others into the module i'm making yet, and not even sure i could do it at this point, but there are those persistent worlds around to play in now, if you like. but again, i may not. the more time i spend playing, the less time i spend in modding smile:)

one thing that might be really cool, would be for everyone to make a mod and then link all those into one giant one and make it persistent. that could be fun, since we're all pretty creative anyways. i can just see a steviej module now....ALL GLASS!!

it can be whatever the module creators make it, ahimsa. you could make it entirely without critters and fighting, if you wanted. the editor allows you to create 'conversations' with 'npc's' (non player characters) and interact with them, which can do all sorts of things by adding triggers that trigger scripts and things like that. so, you could be having a conversation with the mayor of a town, for instance, and you say something or answer something and some event gets set in motion. and there's lots of stuff like that available.

the one i'm working on i'm calling a 'training grounds', so lots of fighting so you can make your levels. plus, it's just a test for me to learn the editor and the game.

So, we would all be in there at the same time, all with weapons, and all could accidentally kill each other?

I tried to play Diablo with Daniel and well, it kind of sucked. You have to go where the other person drags you and try not to kill each other. With my vision I am sure that poor Steve will end up with many arrows in his back from my "accidental" misses. smile:dgrin:

the game allows for different types of interaction. you can set it for player vs player or so that your actions never hurt your partners or friendly npc's.

as for being dragged around, i dont think it works that way. your movements are independent as far as i know.

steve, one of the nice things about NWN 2 is that you can 'export character'. i have several of the same character saved at different levels and i can just import the character i want to use at the start of the module. same guy, but one i exported at different levels. the one in the screenshots is just my top guy because i was testing some rather nasty critters.

exloring is both exterior, like the screenshots i showed, and interior, meaning inside houses, churches, etc. puzzles and quests are set up through triggers, conversation and scripting. i havent done hardly any of that yet in the editor. if you play the campaign game you'll get a feel for what's possible. that is quest driven and pretty linear. the scripting and conversations are the big keys to puzzles and quests. they have both a conversation editor and a scripting editor along with the terrain editing and the creature editing. it's pretty extensive. i could make five trolls, for example, and have them all start from the same template but make and save unique ones. so, i could have a troll wielding a hammer, another with armor on, one that is twice as big as the others and so on and so forth. you can also do this with objects and add scripts to objects. so, your rogue tries to open a locked chest and fails and an alarm goes off.

and where i havent really read the basics on this yet, i believe you can craft your own weapons, armor, clothing and so on. and, i'm fairly sure, but dont hold me to it, that you can import your own models for use. we've got several folks here doing 3d stuff, so that could get pretty slick.

as for character customization, with the bodies you have a fairly decent range of type, everything from a halfling to one beast type (more with mods if you can find them). character look gives hair types, hair color, facial hair, head types, body girth, height (to a certain extent), and is somewhat limited from what i can see other than those things. so, if you wanted a buff looking ogre with tatoos and freckles and a hairy back, no, that's not going to happen. but if you wanted a taller than normal half-elf, with a mohawk haircut, golden eyes, and red hair and also was very thin, yes, you can do that.

now, in the editor, there's actually more options for sculpting the looks of critters and npc's. i saw one tutorial on changing the facial looks pretty radically. but, as far as i can tell, you cant go that extensive on your own characters.

there's tons of items in the game, and i'm fairly sure you can craft (and maybe texture) your own clothing and armors and that sort.

and i dont know a thing about audio communications yet. i'm going to guess is type-to-talk, though. i havent seen anything about direct voice over ip. so, that is a minus if i've got that right.

some of the other drawbacks are that you arent going to roam around in a single gigantic area. the modules are fairly small, at least by some standards. what you do is 'transition' from one area to another within a given module. so, going into a house is usually a transition through a door set up to do this. once you go through, you are now inside with no view of the outside and you transition back out that or another door. still, with some clever terrain building, you can get a fairly decently sized single area to roam around in. and, an almost unlimited number of areas you can set up and transition to.

another drawback is that they dont do walking up things like stairs very well. i set up a ramparts thing next to a high wall and had to raise the ground to allow my characters to get up there. and, when they did make it up, i had set that rampart to 'walkable'. well, it turns out they walked right through it and just followed the slope of the ground underneath. but, that could have just been me not knowing how to set 'walkable' up right.

the strength of NWN 2 is the editing. that's the key to it all being a good module or a not so good one. and i'm guessing the coming expansion pack is going to expand on that. some of the ingame stuff is a bit clumsy at times. you come to a gate and open it. you can also close it. but whenever the cursor is near the gate, the cursor is in gate open/close mode, so you cant click on something just past the gate. little things like that make the game play a little clumsy here and there.

all in all, because i like world building, i generally like the game. but i mostly like the behind the scenes stuff. i've always been a world builder and mostly buy games with editors. so, take what all i'm saying here with that grain of salt smile:)
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
