Hey Dilla, I was just wondering what the advantages of Modo are in comparison to using 3ds Max???

Sorry that I didn't know what you were talking about before in regard to Modo.....I had never heard of it before..... smile:|

I was just thinking if you switched over to Modo from 3ds Max, then there has to be a damn good reason for it??? smile;) smile:)

Well, I'm still forced to use 3dsmax at the studio (but they're slowly migrating to Maya, which is a tad less of an archaic/barbaric PITA). So technically I haven't switched over. smile;)

However, modo is my personal preference when it comes to modeling & uv-editing. It sports a fairly robust painting/sculpting toolset, and the rendering system is VERY powerful and easy to use. Not to mention it's got a modern codebase (as opposed to many other dinosaurs out there) and it is designed around generality and tight integration of all the tools. Modo is the most intuitive piece of 3d software I have ever used, and it just feels "right"... sort of like "hell yeah, that's how 3d should be!".

Thanks!!! smile:)

I read some user reviews which said that they found Modo much easier and more intuitive to use than 3ds Max.....as well as having the same or more powerful rendering abilities.....but you never know about people's "agendas" with reviews.....so I thought that I would get it "straight from the horse's mouth" so to say..... smile;) smile:)

I also found out that it was created on the same base as Blender.....which made me weary because everyone knows how bad the Blender UI is.....I would call it "hostile" as opposed to "user-friendly"..... smile:|

Gotta like ImageSynth as a plugin to it..... smile8)

Thanks again!!! smile:)

Why don't they migrate to Modo?

Um, I think I have probably found the answer - I just found a comparison chart. It looks like Modo is a little weak in the areas of dynamics, rigging, nurbs, soft bodies, hairs, cloth, fluids, particles and compositing.
Particles and compositing are probably better done in a compositing package anyway, but I guess you can do your modeling and texturing in Modo, and setup and dynamics etc. in Maya. I have been reading very nice things about Modo's internal renderer but I guess it will be nice to have the option of mr and RenderMan. smile:)

Exactly. Modo isn't a complete animation/visual fx suite yet (and won't be for some years to come), but it is already being used by many high-profile studios for the creation of digital assets.

I guess weak was not the greatest choice of words - a little like saying Filter Forge is weak in spreadsheets.
Just judging from what I read in the forums, the people that use Modo really like it.

Thanks. smile:)

Well, IIRC, Luxology did show very early versions of their particles and character animation tools at a Siggraph 2006 presentation of the NEXUS architecture behind modo. They'll go there eventually...

That's interesting. I guess it's still too early for Autodesk to buy them - not enough overlap with their existing products. j/k smile:)

Well, the fact that Autode$k attempted to bully some of their resellers into not selling Luxology products some time ago is quite telling, don't you think? smile;)

If they can just keep their prices low, they could be the Red of 3d apps.
