Filter Forge specific:

If, like me, you never use the touch strip for zooming you can use the express key modifier 'space' + drag stylus to zoom. This leaves the touch strip available for undo {Ctrl}Z and redo {Ctrl}Y.

General:

Once the tablet surface begins to be worn smooth but before it develops holes, rotate it 180°. Continue to rotate it on occasion until it develops holes. This can more than double its life.

If you read a lot online, Adobe Reader files not included, set your browser's upper stylus button (normally double click for me – same as tap stylus so it's no loss) to pan/scroll. This avoids using the scroll bar and developing holes on the tablet surface.

These are the only ones I have that are not application specific but if I think of more I will post them here. smile:)

Wottttt! Tablet surfaces wear?! Oh man, I'm gonna buy one soon but did notknow that I'd need to replace them frequently (believe me, I will be using it religiously) smile8)
Yeah I might just apply your wisdom to my method when I get round to owning a tablet, thanx smile:)

Be prepared not to cotton to it right away. The adjustment for me was roughly similar to learning to type. After about three months of continuous use, it was second nature.

You might also save some money by buying a used one that is missing the mouse. The mouse is around 70usd and I have never used mine. In the beginning I would keep it close but now it sits on a shelf. A functional used tablet with a new surface and nib is as good as a new one. smile:)

Cheers for the advice pal smile:)
Yeah, at the moment I'm scanning in my artwork then going over with the pen tool on photoshop (and I was using the laptop pad!) and I admit, it got a bit tiring considering the lines were never perfect.

Have you looked at the 'Live Trace' feature of Adobe Illustrator? It can do some amazing things. I do not know what you are up against with your artwork but it might be worth checking out. There are also several very good edge detection filters in the library that may help. smile:)

Yeah I'm looking at getting the adobe creative suite very soon. I've had a go on Illustrator but it works a little different than photoshop (but no doubt I'll pick it up real quick).

This is the kind of artwork that I usually create...

I would love to get into creating vector images. Something about the "perfect line" that gets me going smile:)

These look cool, illustrator take a bit more time to master compared to PS, you can do some fantastic things with type smile;)

Mine is starting to wear, the mat doesn't seem to have any particularly special qualities, I though of cutting a sheet of similar perspec or vinyl to fit and see if that works smile;) smile:)

If you find something that will substitute be sure to let us know.
Do you use any of the specialty nibs?

I have not needed them yet. It will not be until I return to hand painted textures, or something, that I get to experiment with them. Plus, I may have learned to hold the stylus incorrectly - which may come back to haunt me later. I hold it with my index finger on the buttons and I think I am supposed to press the buttons with my thumb. I like holding it that way and I hope I do not have to change. Do you press the buttons with your thumb or finger?

I found three sheets of clear hard plastic lying around. They had the approximate thickness of a manila envelop. I was able to cut four surfaces from each. So now I am set for years. So far the only noticeable difference is they are smoother with a tad more friction. Actually it feels the same as a new wacom surface. I will post back if there becomes a problem with them later on. Thanks for the tip. smile:)

hyperReal is simply CGI without the low fidelity constraints of reality. smile:)

Sweet! Well I got it and I'm gonna go through the tutorial manuals etc (this is a rare thing btw, mostly too lazy).
I can see FF and Maya being used together a lot smile:)

If you check the menus Help>Tutorial you will find that Autodesk bundled some very nice introductory tutorials for getting started. Plus you can ask me questions. I have tons of links and tutorials.

Good luck smile:)
