Well the time has come to buy a new computer, and I have been doing a lot of shopping around. I have found a 2.8 Ghz dual Core with 3 GB and 400 GB of memory for roughly $700 but I don't really know if this is a good deal or not (owing to the fact I haven't looked at a new computer for quite some time now.). Is there a better deal that you know of for a computer between the prices of $500 - $700? Or is the deal I found reasonable? If you have any suggestions for buying a computer I am all ears. Thanks.
![]() This is the website I found the deal I was talking about, they got pretty good customer ratings. http://www.refurbdepot.com/productdet...icegrabber |

I recently bought a Dell, there service is great, but I don't know how they compare price wise in USA, they were very competitive here, it would be worth getting a quad if you can stretch the dollars

not sure where you're getting the $700. the price of that machine is $489.95 and for that price, with those specs, you're doing fine. do bear in mind that that is a refurb and only has a 90 day warranty, however. i've bought refurbs before and no problems, but that 90 day warranty always scares me a bit. i'd be tempted to throw in their 3 year extended warranty for another $50. i hate doing those, but since the refurb is only 90 days, it might well be worth it in this instance. so, at $540.00 you're still in very good shape.
the only other caveat i can see is that it comes with vista and i'm still very wary of vista. but, it's the new defacto machine and some do like it, so, up to you ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

from what i've heard, the compatibility issue is due to drivers not being out for vista, mostly. i've also heard that the first service pack is in the works and that will help things, i'm sure. but, generally speaking, for myself, i never buy an M$ o/s until the first service pack is out. i'm perfectly happy with XP, so i've little incentive to look at vista.
but, if you've got a working xp machine and want a second with vista, i see no problems. anything that doesnt work on vista you just throw at the xp machine and let it handle it until vista is working better down the road. who was it here on the forums that recently bought a vista machine? perhaps they'd be the one to consult. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Ahh vista from the perspective of someone that has 3 home and 1 work vista boxes and also supports it
re-written network stack --supposed to be better still waiting to see any improvement over the old compatability --its not just drivers as listed alot of older software wont work --but this occured with folks who made the transition to xp as well performance --as beefy as those specs are your vista box should crawl at a nice mediocre pace once vista is in place file transfers --this is the real fun hope you dont copy large amounts of data here and there ever--Very well documented bug in vista here --Your box will come to a screeching crawl and possibly just give up transfering mid transfer --it happens memory leaks --hope you like those to improved ui --it encourages more excersize by making you click through twice as many menus as xp does --this must be the radical improvements in UI they promissed file heiarchy---encrouages brain development by forcing you to wonder where in the heck they put things now?? stuff has been moved all over the place and instead of simplifying the file structure like xp did (Compared to older nt systems its simplified) 64 bit support --if you want to call it that --the 64 bit version is no better then the xp 64 bit version and in some casses worse --on top of that almost none of the system binaries are really 64 bit so its a bunch of bologny the 64 bit title on top of that it will make a complicated file system more complicated by creating secondary files stuctures like program files and program files(x86) etc and its hard enough to find drivers for vista 32 try for vista 64 yikes The only reason I have recomended vista to anyone over xp is direct x 10 if they are a gammer since on average the games will perform WAY better on the same system running xp aviod vista like the plauge in my opinion unless your a gamer price wise the deal dosnt sound to bad but realize for the same price I built a quad core 8gb ram 2 8800 cards with 512 mem etc for my kids and for just a bit more an even more powerful box for myself all by waiting on sales and rebates open boxes etc.. If you are patient and shope carefully for deals you can assemble a box with way more power cheaper lets all whine for a wine port |

lets just say that even a beta tester --that did recieve a free copy of ultimate would never use it unless he had to
next point in case a father that has give his kids each their own linux computer and each their own windows computer dual booting xp and vista and 1 mac they share the Kids love linux and actually whine and cry when the father tells them its time to use vista He might even try to remind them that all the good games like cars and ratatoulie etc are on vista yet they still hate it this is about as good a benchmark as you can get 2 kids that have never even used computers before with someone really encouraging them and they still hate it lets all whine for a wine port |

----No, I just don't get viruses (or scritps cept maybe one a year tops, hell, I rarely get pop ups unless I'm on a torrent site grabbing Fam Guy ha-ha), and I can run any app at 1/2 to 2/3 top speed with service pack 2. And service pack 3 is on it's way man. XP is the pen-ultimate in cpu usage, stability, and choice for pc so far. Sorry volde, XP just does more overall, at a stability/cpu rate I can well afford with 10-20 custom tweaks, and safety I made sure of myself over 6-8 years of running Win98, and XP. ![]() jffe Filter Forger |

Obviously you have never checked out kde4 and compiz for linux if you think vista looks modern talk about a dated old look YUK vista is WAY behind the competition on looks and theese neat little feature you said you learned to love --again never checked out the competition seriously have you try spotlight for osx or beagle for linux and try going back to using vista after that the number of features in the competition compared to vista is silly preaty every feature microsoft prommised would be in vista and Thne never made it --The free guys have figured out allready and OSX includes most of them as well dated Vista is sorely dated by its functionality and security lets look at this because this is a big one in a windows world currently the security situation is better in vista but that will probably change the difference limited access rights ---right well the problem with those limited rights is once the user (who typically never reads what the computer is telling them) once they have clicked continue --THEY ARE GRANTED EVEN DEEPER ACCESS TO THE SYSTEM CORE THEN IN XP--kernel level even So even though Im a 5th rate coder after a talk with my boss about 8 months ago just to illustrate the point I whipped out a script that foolled the system into thinking it had received confirmation from the user when it had not---simple task to bypass all the new ""SECURITY"" and Im no real coder --how long before we start seing exploits to take advantage of this I actually was highly impressed with the alpha and beta of xp when I tested them for microsoft--lets just say not so much vista--Im familliar with just about every platform out there including older ones --so Im not just predispositioned to one experience --Im open to them all Vista is WAY dated compared to the competition --and wich is more importatn to most folks a preaty window decoration --or something that works service pack 1 ---does address some major issues but if you are expecting a performance boost like we got with xp service packs --dont not one review has mentioned any benefit allong those lines --and I confirm the pack does nothing like that in fact my system lost about 5% performance with it This is the same system that countless exectutive emails have been leaked preaty musch showing that all the top management at microsoft thinks its a dog even Bill Gates and Balmer have slipped some comments along those lines themselves No im waitin for windows 7 to see if they learned their lessons or not --Im just chalking vista up to a mistake --a VERY big mistake but a mistake anyhow If you think Im being overly pationate about it just start reading reviews -the kind review of vista is a rare occurence --where xp when it came out got rave reviews and its not the landscape that has changed --osx continues to recieve rave reviews --its the quality of microsofts product --you like vista good for you every user should have their choice I just dont want to see anyone led to vista without their eyes wide open Ive had to revert WAY to many users back to xp for that reasone also the number of converts to osx & linux ---in the past year i have done 6-7 times as many then all the previous years combined that says alot since its them coming to me --I dont go out of my way for extra work like that They come up with the idea them seleves this speaks volumes when even grandmas are so fed up with the windows sceene they take the time to research alternatives I can only imagine the ammount of converts if I compaigned for it n lets all whine for a wine port |

----Oh, I meant cause I called WinXp the best pc O/S ever, and I assume you'd rather run Linux or whatever. I just found XP to be very stable overall, very hardware/software friendly for the most part, and pretty simple to navigate if a person is already familiar with the basic Windows layout/hiearchy. I'm not aware of Vista being able to do anything that XP with 4-5 free apps can't do. Vista is apparently not the leap forward like XP was, and I think we all remember WinME, that's what happens when ya don't take a big step forwrad ha-ha. ![]() jffe Filter Forger |

From what I've heard, MS has done some major platform changes with Vista.....thus the "lag" in compatable driver development.....
Friends of mine aren't going to implement Vista in their businesses until it has all the drivers and all the bugs are worked out of it..... Steve

so what your basically saying is --never ![]() just kidding but I really wouldnt hold my breath since microsoft is really shifting gear towards windows 7 --I think they realized they made a huge mistake with vista and are going to fuccus now on making sure 7 isnt the same kind of mistaked and --yeah out of all the business I help with computers and IT I know --only one comp out of all of them has deployed vista to any users beyond a test phase --and they keep hounding me to help them revert their boxes --Even though I told them for months to get a mac or keep xp --theese same guys get themselves in a fix about once a month and as much as I like helping folks 8 years of it is getting old lets all whine for a wine port |

here is the problem if you buy a new box --make sure that you can obtain xp & vista drivers for all parts including motherboard next wait a while --there have been some REALLY nasty bugs cropping up in the lattest build of SP1 I have a feeling that after SP1 there might be a few emergency patches released --wait till all the brush fires from SP1 are out then make your move another option is to dual boot your system so your not trapped by any one system good luck with yoru new comp whatever you decide ![]() lets all whine for a wine port |

if you still have a partition with vista on it go into vista at the search field of your start menu type explorer when the results show c:\windows\system32\explorer right cick and choose run as administrator go to the c:\windows\system32 folder in folder options unhide everything select a folder that now shows up called inf set properties so everyone including your uncle can access inf go into xp and when propted for a driver point it to the vista inf folder gotten quite a few folks system to work this way before I wipe a sys I allways copy inf and anyother driver related folders because even though windows gripes about wrong driver --(hey its not working anyway) quite often you can mix and match this way with a little creativity lets all whine for a wine port |

one other note forgot to mention there is another way to get the vista driver to work
download the executable installer download the setup editor ""orca"" from microsoft edit any system check in the msi or setup install it --and point xp to the new drivers quite often winrar can also extract the setup.exe contents to a folder where you can do the same thing lets all whine for a wine port |
