ok, i said i'd post some shots of a new filter i'm working on. i dont have an official name yet, so, if someone can think of one based on these posts, feel free.

this one is mostly about angles and 'sculpures' and a sort of architectural look, only abstract. it currently only works in black and white and only square images. i just think the renditions are kinda cool looking. this one was started, then dropped a long time ago. i just recently picked it back up and made some upgrades based on a new understanding of FF. i dont know what use anyone would have for this, but this stuff is somewhat fascinating and just plain fun smile:)

if i can figure out how to add color to these, i may borrow some of steviej's parts from his colorful filters and incorporate in this.

If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Nice!!! It also seems like you are just one step away from a "true" 3D koleidoscope (sp?) effect as well....

Do you want to use color lighting to bring the shapes out in a 3D effect? If you want to color the shapes themselves, maybe plug in a curve with a subtle wave profile right after the shapes are conceived in your program....or maybe a little of both?

Personally, I'm drawn to where pic #2 and pic #6 are going....especially pic #2.

It will be really neat to see what you do with this.... smile:)

stevie, thanks smile:) always appreciate the feedback.

well, i'm not really going for the 3d anaglyph thing, but i was pleasantly surprised by the shadowing and highlights that got added to the background on some of those.

as for color, i'm not sure how i'm going to attempt that yet, or even that i will. this may be one of those that just lends itself better to black and white, but i'll no doubt experiment. and yes, a wave curve might work and in more than one place. the trick is going to be controlling the color. i may want to separate things out a bit with a threshold and then color. not sure yet. i'm still experimenting with the shapes themselves, so color is a bit of a ways off yet. lol, i keep adding things and distracting myself from the original vision on this thing. gotta get more disciplined on this.

i'll show you what i mean:

If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

i may also rework this so that i get a consistent shade and light background and then make the object more of a piece by itself. #5 shows how this is not so. the object and background blend into each other too much. currently, the background and foreground are all rendered on the same path or leg, so i may split these into two legs and then combine them back at the end.

Wow!!! This filter is going to do alot!!!

Don't get me wrong....I really like it 'as-is'. You know how I am smile:) ....to me, this is begging for some color.....or at least a faint hint of irridescence....

Something about pic #2 that has me going....the combination of shapes....and the 3d effect on the center post which seems to have reflections on it. That pic reminds me of modern sculptural art that sells for big $$$$$$ smile:)

well, i trimmed out a whole bunch of noisy stuff and stuff that changed the original style too much. still havent separated the fore and backgrounds, though.

irridescence might be interesting, but not sure how i'd do that. so, i may leave that to you smile:)

yes, #2 was a complete surprise to me. there are more like that as well. i left those in, even though they are quite a departure from the original style. they're just too cool to remove smile:)

i also made one with surface lighting just for #2 and it REALLY gives it some depth, but it warped the other stuff too much, so i took that back off. maybe i shld just make the original style and #2, two different filters.

ok, here's one with color, surface and a custom lighting environment. the custom was the only current way i have of giving it color.

Oh man, night and day!!! smile:) This looks awesome!!! Tiled would be mesmerizing.... I'm betting that this is giving you more than a few ideas with your other presets smile:)

Another easy way to get some different color effects is to use a very shallow wave profile (very low amplitude and strung out frequency) plugged into 'Tone Curve' and then plugged into 'blend' with what you already have. Maybe a mix of wave and lighting.....not so much here, but on pic #2....

Great job!!! I'm trying to catch up smile:)

hmmm, curves and tone curves. that might work.

another might be with color gradients, like the 5 color gradient or a noise gradient. the problem would be with controlling where the color goes.

These are looking cool Kraellin..I think I like 1, 2 and the last b/w one the best..
They do look like some kind of sculptures..

Did you ever try the Color Shifting snippet. It might be a method that would work for the color..

ok, i borrowed CF's color shifter and adapted it a bit to this filter. i cut out the frame and other two components following that and used the rest... i think. i did look at your colorworx, stevie, but it was a bit too complex for this one. color shifter is really simple and worked well. but, thanks smile:)

i lost some of my presets in fooling around with all this. i do wish there was a more reliable way to save that from happening.

anyways, let the color commence!

thanks, CF.

ok, i cleaned things up a bit more and did a few more with different color schemes.

the question on this filter now is, how much more do i trim? i've got what seems to be two different styles. i could make these each a filter by themselves or leave it as is. there are 37 controls, but i'm not sure separating it out to two filters would lower that amount substantially in either filter. by dropping off various switched legs i'd only be dropping a few controls that exist on those legs. so, not a big savings there.

the filter renders pretty fast. there's only one perlin, no sharpens, no high passes, no blurs of any kind or anything else that really slows it down. so, even with leaving 5 samples in the anti-aliasing turned on, it's pretty fast.

I'm blind!!! hehehe smile:) Wow, when you colorize something, you ain't kiddin around smile:)

I've been saving a copy of the filter before each adjustment to avoid loosing presets. If something major happens during a parameter adjustment, I go back and start again with the last good copy. Another thing I've learned to do (which you probably already know) is to neutralize all settings on effects, controls, etc. before plugging any of them in so nothing gets affected....and go from there....

well, i didnt mean to blind you. nor did i mean to alter your monitor settings, but hey, if i'm that good, i might have to take up 'the dark side' smile:D

well, i'm getting old and forgetful, so a lockdown on the presets would be nice. but, i'd probably just forget to lock them down smile:) but yes, i do save a copy of each work within the editor. the current version is up to about 1z1. so, that's about 27 versions. and mostly i also do the neutralizing of settings, but there's always (well, mostly always) that one version where i forget to change settings back before i save. lol.

and yes, it was the depth on the black and white originals that kept me going on this filter and made me think it had potential.

i've got most all of the unwanted stuff cleaned up now. but, i'm still not sure just how much to include in this thing. i've got one major leg, which produces the original look and a couple other legs that alter that with a switch. the color shifter is fine. i'll keep that in all versions. and i'm thinking that maybe it would be best to release a simple version and an advanced... strip out all but one leg on the simple and then throw in the kitchen sink on the other. yeah, that sounds kinda good.

cool. could you steer me towards one in particular?

oh, and there's a naming convention thing to consider here. with almost 1700 filters now (and almost that many more in 'my filters'), it's getting harder and harder to find any one filter. i had to look around on the forums and in the library to find some of your anaglyph submissions. i think some were even in different library categories. if you named each one 'Anaglyph, xxx' instead of 'xxx anaglyph', it would be easier to find them. i could then just key in on the anaglyph part when looking rather than 'hover' or whatever the others happened to start with.

i think vladimir is going to re-do the library at some point and hopefully this will get easier.

ok, i ran the third pic through easy anaglyph and anaglyph depth. both, on my screen, give parallax and appear to be set back from the outer gray background.
