this was done with the FF2-beta, but i didnt use any of the new toys, so i'm putting the sample here rather than in the FF2 beta forum. this is also a re-make of a filter i did but never published. the beta has been inspiring me to go back and look at earlier filters and re-do them. Shallow river bed? Do like. Except the stones are still obvious, can you do some sort of perlin mix to make them less recognizable? Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF

yup, in fact the name of the filter is 'streambed'. uhm, it's shallow, so the stones shld be obvious. lol. however, there is a slider to adjust the opacity for more water/less stone or less water/more stones... i think. i'll have to check it later. it's on the other computer. i may, not that i look at that pic again, put something on the stones to soften the edges, also. rocks in water tend to be more rounded with fewer sharp edges.
anyways, thanks for the comments If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Yeah, see I was more talking about that last part, about them being rounded, and less recognizable as the actual noise component, but the clarity of the actual stone texture is perfect. Maybe smaller though. Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF

it actually didnt take too much restraint. i rebuilt the entire filter using less than 1/4 the number of components. it just happened that i didnt need any of the new ones. however, with betis' comments, i may rework it some more and that could then take me into the new stuff If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

yep, the median, maximum, minimum and percentile components are very helpful.
ok, here's an update on the streambed filter. notice the rocks are more rounded now and the reflection isnt quite so plastic looking. the odd thing now is that this filter is making some nice rock filters (not shown) rather than water on rock. i'm putting these here, even though this is using some of the new components, because it's an older filter that never got finished and because i havent put anything here in a while
this started out as a painting filter, evolved sort of into a watercolor and then just got weird. it's now sort of a painter/watercolor/grunge/etcher and who knows what, but i like some of the results. this could easily be about 5 or 6 different filters if i was publishing, but so far it's just for play and has over 50 controls. it might need some trimming before i'd publish If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

hi carl,
thanks
yes, the blurring was a result of trying to get a watercolor diffused/bleeding look. i still want to do a proper, runny, bleeding, smudgy, diffused watercolor and with the new components, especially median and percentile, i may be able to do it now. the blur and motion blur just wouldnt quite work right. so, this filter is sort of an experimental, hopefully leading to the original purpose of watercolor.
as a curiousity, did you guys where you live ever have the old Pratt watercolor paint sets? they came in a black, flat, elongated rectanglur tin that had about 8 little trays of which each tray had a different watercolor color. it came with one brush and you dipped the brush in water and then in whatever color tray you wanted to paint with and then painted. and, you normally painted on very coarse, porous paper, which ran/bled a lot. i havent seen one of those Pratt sets in years, but they were kind of fun If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

ok, ya got me talkin about the monster again. lol. that's always dangerous so, i loaded it up in FF2 on my quad core. the beast liked it! POWER! FEED ME! so, i fed it. lo and behold one of the legs spawned into its own filter and ate a couple of the new components. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
or, you can just look at the new pic
i know there are others out there similar to this one, but i still liked it. it seemed a little 'cleaner' or something, so i'm posting one pic. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

it's sort of bland right now, though i did work on it some more and got it a little better. i'll probably end up putting it on a back burner for now. i'm just kind of going through old filters from ver 1 and seeing if i can do anything with them using FF2. so, i'm not spending a lot of time with any one filter right now. ok, just a couple to show you what i've been up to. these are modeled after crapadilla's noise lab/workshop but with the addition of bombers. the amount of extra detail is noticeable and the ambient occlusion makes it even more so. these are still rough. i'm just experimenting, so dont expect anything too awfully spectacular. that filter has way too many controls and is wide open. the drawback is that it's hard to predict. the plus is that it can produce an extreme variety of textures. so, it's good as an idea filter... it gives me ideas by just hitting 'next' If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

well, they're nothing spectacular, but i do like the variety i'm getting.
and yes, i do like controls... gives you more choices... choices gives you more creative freedom... which gives you more variety and we all know variety is the spice of life
fossils in stone... hmmm. ok, i can kinda see that.
what's nice about the bombers is that they give you more variety of detail and allow more gritty textures with a realistic look, as opposed to the simple perlin look which is getting somewhat recognizable. the new lighting helps too in that it enhances the gritty, detailed look even more. am looking forward to the next stage If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

ok, here's another from that same filter. i've added a little more color control. i must say, FF2 is just brilliant! vlad, if you're reading this, my hat's off to you guys. i'm making textures now i would have had a hard time making in FF1 and i'm doing it easily. just brilliant!
ok, this one shows something of what i mean in that last paragraph. the detail in this is just marvelous. if i saw this on a texture site i would be hard pressed to say whether it was a photo or done artificially, and to me, that's the true test of a texture producing program, does it rival photographic quality. with the new features, including the ambient occlusion, i can now say yes, it does rival photographic.
