thanks, carl
i removed the bottom half of the shadow and light routine and only used the top half. so, all the streaks are gone. instead of plugging the streaks into the offset, i plugged a new image component into the offset source, and then after that, i added a noise distortion, i think it was. i did a lilttle re-mapping, too, on one or two components. there might have been a tiny bit more, but i forget. that was the basics, though.
and yes, i like that one, too If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

you got me interested in sketches again, steve, with those pics you posted. i like that style. so, i had a look at byRo's sketch filter and did a little mod. now, this is still far from the pics you posted, but i liked these initial attemps. hehe, i see it more as melted metals rather than anything alien. the filter itself is named 'Rock - Slag' or something like that. it's a filter i did along my whole rock series, which came about from crapadilla's thread in the 'creating filters' forum on noise or noise factory or whatever he called it. it was quite a good workshop thread and still quite valuable for anyone wanting to learn more about tweaking and building with the noise components. myself, i must have done about 50 or more filters like this and rock and so on, playing with the various technques that dilla had raised. so, a lot of that filter where that image comes from is a direct result of dilla's thread. i made the filter, but he was supplying some of the best underlying concepts for it through that thread.
also, it's come to my attention, having been away for the weekend and having viewed this page on a different computer, that boy, there are really some crappy monitors out there. i looked at that 'slag' image above here and it was really dark and the colors werent right and bleh! so, if the image looks like 'bleh', you might want to think about first, calibrating your monitor, and if that doesnt improve it, getting a new monitor. (and no, i wasnt referring to you, betis, on this one. just a general note to anyone ). If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Kraellin, I had an idea for those brush/pencil stroke kind of filters. If you *somehow* used like say Volde's "tile and rotate 8 directions" (Distortion category) filter, and made the brush strokes change direction a lot. Like a painter or pencil artist might move their hand around as they drew the picture. Anyways, just an idea.

excellent! you know what else this reminds me of, jffe... outdoor patio tiles, those large cement things, where the round parts are the tiles and so are the square ones, but the gray/white other part is like gravel fill or something like that. and by putting a little roughness on the 'tiles' parts, it would be even more convincing that way. i like this. good pattern. release any of them? nah, i just do these to tease steve
i've considered releasing a lot of them, but there is no incentive, particularly, to release them to the library. i already have my lifetime upgrades through HU's and i've even got enough for another one or two, if i wanted them. but, i have no big reason for getting another, at the moment. what i was thinking of doing was sending some to fred (sign guy), or at least, sending him some textures and seeing if i couldnt make a little $$ that way. i've already got the license agreements he sent and i've already printed them out to sign and send back. i just havent fully read them yet.
i seem to keep giving my art away, here, retouchpro and now a bit on facebook. it's been mostly a hobby, so i havent minded too much. and if folks responded more at least i'd get something back for my efforts. lol. you and steve have been great about responding and one or two others in the past, but of late, FF has kind of died in the forums a bit. but, never say never. i did release one not too long ago and i may release some from time to time, but not right at the moment.
have you noticed that most artists that come here dont tend to stay very long? i mean, foxxee, northernshadow... where'd they go? and i'm guessing you can think of others. and it's not the program. we know the program is great. but i just keep hitting against the 'ok, so why am i submitting these now?' barrier and i cant come up with a reason to get past that. the early incentive program is very good, very smart, but then it just dies and away goes the artist. i mean, they have to pay bills, too.
hehe, sorry, i didnt mean to write a book you asked a simple question and the simple answer is, uh, no, not right now
have you submitted anything recently? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I guess I release one [ effects filter ] every couple of months, not quite sure why LOL, as you say there is no incentive to do so, ff has squashed any attempts by authors to get any competitions going even with us supplying the prizes I like you have more HUs than I need, even giving away copies. By the silence on the protection of authors FF obviously feel they can be sustained by new authors and old authors who don't care about exploitation. The list of quality authors who have left due to no incentives is long, and with them has gone the fundamental construction standards and speed consideration, just look at the last six months of ep [ with the exception of Apple ] with simple mods such as Jffe, Rons and KG, others very slow, poor controls - but it seems if the default looks good that's enough. Dilla's high standards are forgotten since he took a back seat at FF. V2 will possibly draw authors back short term. The gallery is a failure because they decided to segregate contributions into good and bad [ even though they haven't stuck to there own criteria " •Don't submit filter renderings 'as is' (we can already see them in the Filter Library.)" instead of randomly featuring each contribution. By branding some as below standard, the risk for credibility isn't worth the contribution, as can be seen by how few have submitted.

Unfortunately giving away to much devalues all digital art and your own artist and creative value. FF is constantly devaluing itself through discounting [ quick look above, 35% discount today ]
You mention the forum dying, if you weren't a polite constant here then the forums and newbie encouragement would be dead

well, thank you. i was glad to hear your thoughts on all this.
i hadnt looked at the gallery postings and seen any 'good' labels or 'bad' labels. i'll have to look again. where do you see these or is it more subtle? i saw the gallery as another 'uhm, why am i posting this? where is the incentive for doing this?' sort of thing again. i thought it was a great idea and perhaps even a move to get authors interested and maybe even heading towards something authors could use to earn rewards of some kind, but that hasnt happened. at best, it's a decent promotional tool for FF, but doesnt reward those that contribute to it and therefore, to FF's success.
i wonder if fred (sign guy) would consider selling photo art pieces along with some of the other stuff he's putting up now?
i'm a bit surprised that a third party site hasnt risen up to sell the filters themselves, let alone the products of FF filters. there's certainly that potential out there. i mean, FF, inc. basically seems to want to develop and sell filter forge, which we all want and vlad really doesnt seem that interested in taking on the responsibility of handling author products and services. i can somewhat understand that (though i think he could have a ball doing it). i mean, we all tend to drool and scream over version two waiting in the wings. so, vlad seems content to ride things like they are. that's no reason a third party couldnt step up, and, it shld be mentioned that fred has. i'm not sure wholly to what extent, but he has. a number of authors have submitted things to him for selling on his site(s). but, what i'm talking about is a true, third party FF site, one for authors with a storefront and upload capability and all that would go along with an author's products and services type store. filter sales, filter by-products, photo art, textures, and the whole lot. seems a natural to me. and again, fred does come close and i applaud him for that, but it's not quite a true FF third party service. it's more the commercial signs thing, which is fine, but i had always hoped vlad would fill this void with some extra services.
hehe, oh well... maybe after version 2? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
