After using FF for long enough, you can't help but start to come up with ideas that best fit in the category of "why in the world would anybody do that in Filter Forge?"
Not only do you come up with the ideas, but one day you find yourself making the filter although there is no logical reason to do it in FF. I suspect it is a sign of deepening addiction to Filter Forge from which there is no return. And on that note, it's only too appropriate to start this thread with my latest development along this line: Welcome to the Matrix. ![]() |

Well, I'll be damned , it did make an EP.
I put the most "perspectivized" examples in this thread, but quite a variety of effects can be made with the filter; if you decrease the "depth" low enough, you will begin to see the original picture. Well, you can see some of the other effects in the presets. The original idea probably goes back all the way to one of my all-time favorite movies, Brainstorm, with Christopher Walken, which had some computer-generated scenes similar to the look of the filter. I was actually surprised how easy it was to make correct depth perspective with the offset/gradient method. A linear increase in the offset percentage automatically creates exponential scaling. (Hold on -- I just realized something! I'll be right back. I gotta try something out...) |

Now that I know what I'm looking for -- yes it is. I could not earlier quite figure out what made the perspective work in that filter, but the key is indeed mapping the image depth into the percentage input of the offset. I'm thinking maybe we should start a thread to explain (in simple terms) how this perspective transformation works? There's a helluva lot of potential in it. Plus make some handy snippets/filters? "Infinite Plane" comes to mind first looking at the Pyramids filter. |

Okay, some more crazy stuff.
Here's my proof of concept of using perspective transformation for landscapes. A fairly complex image created purely in FF with one filter. (Once I can connect to the server again, I'll submit it...) This is called "On the Road Again." I stuffed all kinds of things in there to test things out: ground place, cloud plane, water, somewhere to go and some way to get there. ![]() |

wow! i feel like such an amateur. quite amazing, 3D!
![]() uhm, one question here; someone did a perspective filter before. it was four walls going to the vanishing point/horizen. is this a similar means of doing that same thing? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

i had to look at the guts on the 'welcome to the matrix'. i re-arranged things to make them a touch easier to read. i'm surprised how fast the filter renders, given all the components within.
i also altered only one component. i set the 'sphere frequency' from 10 to 20 max. this gives a heavier density potential and makes for tighter art images, if you use the filter that way. attached is an example of the heavier density used that way. ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Yeah, that's good, works nicely. Another thing you might want to try is to plug a 'Chaos' control into the Tiles components. It gets pretty interesting. That modification turns it into a 'particle generator' of sorts. |

And now for something completely different:
I got this idea doing the Halloween Party Drink filter. See -- the strangest ideas give birth to... even stranger ideas. Lathing a custom profile in FF! Gotta admit, this one was a real challenge. I decided at least three times along the way it was impossible. In fact, it probably is. Nevertheless, the solution eventually arose. Here's an example: ![]() Here is the original image before running it through the filter. Image (texture): ![]() Selection (profile): ![]() |

Another example.
The filter features optional advanced controls for Reflection, Reflection Blur and Metallic, which can be derived from one of the RGB channels. Since you can't get any extra alpha channels into FF, I went that route. As in the previous example, you can see that different texture areas have different Reflection, Reflection Blur and Metallic properties. Image: ![]() Selection: ![]() Result: ![]() |

whoa, slow down there, 3D
![]() ![]() let's go back to that bottle image. you did that bottle completely in FF or are you just talking about a treatment done to the bottle image that already existed? and what is 'lathing a custom profile'? i sort of have an idea of what you're talking about, but i want to be clear on this. so, walk us ignorant savages through it, if you would ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Oops. You mean you can't see my monitor...? In this case, the 3D object itself is created in FF, not the textures. Going back to the bottle image, I made the flat texture and the bottle profile in Photoshop and then Filter forge made it into a "3D" bottle based on those two images. Kinda like doing 3D without a 3D program. Okay, let's take that one step at a time: I made this image in Photoshop (not FF): ![]() Then in the same image I made this alpha channel (selection): ![]() With the selection active, I opened FF and run the filter on it and, voila, I got this: ![]() In 3D modeling "lathe" is an operation where you rotate a flat profile (such as the profile of the bottle here) around an axis to create a 3-dimensional object. Any object which is a circle in cross section along one axis can be made with a lathe operation; this includes things like bottles, glasses and cups, light bulbs and lamp shades, plates, pots, plungers, and so on. In real life lathe is a machine where some material (generally a wood or metal rod) rotates around at great speed while you carve it into a shape. This all started when I was doing the glass for the Halloween Party Drink and was frustrated at how difficult it is to make a good shape for the glass with FF Components. This started me wondering whether is was possible to start with a profile done in some other way and have FF turn it into an object. |

Um.. that made me think of the cigarette filter.. probably is possible to knock up a filter to use as the image as well. Kinda overlaying different filters. Makes me think there might be away to do the alpha shapes too.. Then build up the picture using layers and the different filters. Cool one 3d! ![]() Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)
