this is a difficult one to make and i'm certainly not there yet. so, i'm posting this up for some help.
black glass, really good black glass can make for extremely interesting looks. especially, if things behind the glass are colorful and well lit. the problem duplicating this look in FF or photoshop, is the extremely low refractive index (i think that's the right term here). there just isnt that much light coming through the glass to get a good refraction on. therefore, most attempts look like just dark lighting. it's hard to get the glass part of the look. so, any ideas on this would be helpful. i'm posting one example image of where i am so far and may just post the whole filter later on. if you look at the handle on steve's cup here, that's sort of the look, but less opaque. you would have refracted highlights on the objects behind the glass, but reflections, modified somewhat by the stuff behind the glass, on the glass surface, but also of a low intensity. it's quite tricky, at least for me. ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Did someone mention "Glass"???
![]() It kinda looks like a self-refracter.....where you plug the image straight into the source and height.....but I know you have alot more going on to get the black, tones, and texture..... It looks like you have the lighting right.....because your whitest white is on the edge of depletion..... I think That I know what you are looking for.....that crystal clear depth that you find in thick smoked glass??? I think that you are going to have to use the surface result for the shine.....profile grads to get it to conform to the object shape.....blur a "very" fine directional scratch noise just past non-visabled for the depth.....and experiment with blends and opacities (usually 25% for something like this) to add it in. Oh, do the blends before refraction..... Take a look at how Dilla used scratches for depth in his "Shark Tank".....very similar to that..... Hope this helps.....if you are not already doing it ![]() PS..... I would also suggest using other images besides the cup to test it.....the depletion of the cup pic can easily mislead you with glass filters......from my experience with it ![]() Steve

hmmm, hadnt thought of using profile gradients. i try to stay away from those because how badly they can break non-square images. but, i may have to try anyways.
and as for the smoked glass remark, yes, sort of. i'm a bit ambiguous yet as to which way to go. i could do it so that the black glass is seemingly over the import, or, i could do it so the black glass IS the objects in the import. either way shld be interesting. in the image i posted, there's sort of a bit of both and that may be part of the problem. and yes, it's a surface filter, currently. not sure how the profile grads would 'get it to conform to the object shape...'. care to elaborate on that? in 'shark tank'? hmm, have to look at that again, then. well, i used the cup image on purpose because of the predominant white of the cup. i wanted to turn the cup into black glass...mostly. like i say, i'm still ambivalent about where to go with this. i've seen some of your glass filters that basically turn an object in an image into almost crystal and that's sort of the look i was going for, but black crystal. the look i'm thinking of is almost an obsidian black but with a glass reflective/refractive and opacity quality to it. i've seen it in real life and it's quite a stunning effect, but it's eluding me here in FF. here's a link to a site about black glass. these arent quite it, but it will sort of give you an idea. on this first one, scroll down to the image and look at the bottle on the left. that's as close to the look as i can find so far on google: http://www.bottlebooks.com/blglssin.htm If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

So the reflections stay large and form-fit the object.....like it looks on any continuous smooth class object.....
I actually have all of those bottles in my collection.....except for the one on the left. They're all deep green with a light source behind them for the photo..... It sounds like you want polished and contoured smoked crystal.....or 'dalle de verre' (slab glass) objects. Either way, I think you are going to need to blend some form of noise or scratches before refraction in order to create the subtle to hard 'inclusions' for the depth..... I think you want somthing like this.....only much darker and the image composed in glass instead of embedded in it??? ![]() Steve

Nope.....it's from one of my 5 trillion un-submitted 3D glass filters ![]() ![]() Actually, if Craig is doing what I think he's trying to do.....you will have something much better than my sample..... Steve

putting this one on the back burner, steve. too many pots in the fire right now. need to go back to some of the basics and get a better understanding of some things.
so, thanks for the help and suggestions and feel free to do a 'black glass' of your own. then i can steal, err, check out your concepts ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Actually, the effect in your first cup pic is kinda neat with the black, dark sepia, and texture.....I was wondering how it effected other images???

yes, i've put a ton of stuff on the back burner. got some other studies i'm doing at home right now and that's taking priority over some of these unfinished filters. i'm still goiong to try to release the one for ahimsa, the rock and snow one, but other than that, most is on the back burner. i would also like to finish the waterfall one. i like that one, so i'll probably squeeze that one in there too.
![]() ah, email. lol. glad you reminded me. i dont check that thing very often ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I really like how the metallic is popping out
![]() ![]() I would suggest taking a peek at the lead preset to Carl's "Atmosphere Metallic".....maybe that slight spectral metallic sheen effect might be the glass 'kicker' that you are looking for to bring out the "black" glass..... Steve

yeah, a little metallic and a little glass.

I think Carl's filter in particular goes along with this concept you are creating.....
There's no way that I would ever have the time to look at every last one of them ![]() ![]() Steve
