I tend to misuse other people's filters. Some of my designs end up as t-shirts. T-shirt graphics are square. That is how they are printed on. Mine are 10” by 10”. (that is CafePress' requirements) A guy has to work hard to keep the designs from all looking the same. I am always looking for different ways to frame my graphics. Ghislaine's new v4 of her GF Spirowires Maker filter seemed to to present an opportunity for me to come up with some new frames. It requites using it in a way that is nothing like she intended. Here is an example.

Ghislaine's filter will only produce square images, so the first thing I do is change the image size and stretch it. Then I do a selection of the inner and outer black, and then invert the selection. Now I have just the spiro part selected. Then I go to town on it.

I add some texture to the selection and do a little embossing and such in PhotoShop. I layer this image on top of my image and delete the center of the frame. Kinda cool coneflower frame.

You can use anything as a texture for the frame. I wanted to buy this old tractor but someone beat me to it. They had an unfair advantage. They had the money.

You can go all crazy with the texture like I did on this one. I used a bunch of filters on it. Sorry I did not keep track. I was just having fun. I also distorted the frame to misshape it as well. These guys were made in a vector app on my Ipad. They are just talking. I don't know what about. They ain't all square anymore ….......

Gene, they were talking about love, it is evident LOL smile:) Just looking the hearts (Mardar's filter)...

You are a genius in what you create. Thanks for this mini-tut. The way that you are using this filter is astonishing and unsuspected. I'm glad you give him another utility. Great work all these beautiful frames and the way to fill them! I always look forward to seeing what you're going to create. You are unique in your genre. We can't go wrong by saying that you have lots of creative imagination. You take pleasure in creating all these wonderful things. The important thing is to be happy in what we do. It's fulfilling. smile:)

Gene, you never cease to amaze me smile:)
You keep finding ways to use filters in the most unusual ways, and get your inspiration from everything a filter can do, wheter it's shape, texture or anything else smile8)

I made my latest filter for my own use, which is what I always do. I have been cartooning a lot lately and I made the filter as a tool to help me understand cartoon expressions. It does not do anything more than allow you to change certain aspects of a funny face to try to see examples of emotions. There are not many lines available in a cartoon face, so you have to make the best of what you got. By changing just the eyes and mouth you get all kinds of moods out of the face. I also allowed for some tilt of the head and movement of the brows. Like I said, it is a dumb filter.

As an afterthought I added a drop shadow and allowed for adding a background. Here I used a tile created with a pattern in one of Gigi's spiro filters. That may make the filter a little more interesting, but not enough.

A quick trick to make the egg shaped head look a little better is to use image sizing in Photoshop, (Or what ever image editing program you use) and allow the proportions to be altered. I changed my 8 by 8 image into a 4 by 8. Stretched it our and made him look kinda skinny.

Using the magic wand tool I selected the skin color and went to work in FF. I try to use a number of different texturing methods to give my cartoons a different look. Lately I have been using my Digital Impressionism filter to add texture. (I was surprised I just got a HU for that filter. Bet most folks don't use it like I do.) I use my Foggy Edges filter to adds some fake shadow and highlighting. He may not be great art but he sure looks different than the original Funny Face filter output.

I have a history I'm not very proud of. Back before digital cameras were common, I used to scan photos and mess with them. I became addicted for awhile to a program called Super Goo from KPT. With it you could take an image and distort it with a brush. I would take people's faces and make characters out of them. Yes, and even monsters. Nowadays many other programs exist to do the same thing, including some Ipad apps and Photoshop. In Photoshop it is called liquify. That is what I used to change my boring funny face egg guy into something a bit more strange. Now it is getting fun.

Since my filter allows you to use just a single color background, it is easy to do a lot by using the magic wand to sel ect different parts of the image to work on. That is how I added the patterned background. Then with the face color selected I went crazy. I won't explain all the filters I used, just say they were all mine. I get going on that kind of thing and I go into a trance and just start hitting the Variations buttons on a bunch of filters until I get something I like. That is what makes FF so much fun. I ended with a couple of instances of my Foggy Edges again. I added some details to the eyes and some highlighting as well. It was a fun image to make fr om a very dumb and simple starting point …....

I always feel guilty for not commenting on other people's filters much. I am in a very slow internet situation because I only have dial-up at my house. I usually only download filters once a week with the library's WiFi. By the time I get to try out a new filter it is no longer new. I figure that is too late to pat someone on the back. But that does not mean I don't like or use good filters made by other folk. To me the best filters are ones that force me to use my imagination to come up with unique ways to apply them. I really like Horus' Logo Creator filter. I see it as a kind of roar-shock test. (I know that is not spelled right, but I'm talking about those ink blot test shrinks use to figure how messed up in the head you are) I hit the variations until something cool shows up. I think that stimulates the imagination. In this one the bottom part pops up and I thought it looked kinda like a body. I repeated until I got something that looked somewhat like a head. I glued the head on the body. Do you see it? Or am I just crazy ? You be the judge.

I started painting clothing and detailing the head a bit and was quite surprised to see this funky bear show up. Actually it was all right there. It did not take much to make it real. That always amazes me. The hands didn't quite make it, but I was determined to use the images just as it was so I left parts of it pretty abstract. I added some of my crosshatch filter texture to the image just because I'm that kind of guy.

One thing about how I create graphic projects is that once I get going it just rolls out of control. I let the creative process take over and just wait to see what happens. That is my excuse for not remembering how I came up with the background texture pattern. I just went crazy with FF and the next I knew, there it was. Sorry if it comes from someone elses' filter which I don't give credit for because I don't remember. As I have said before I use some kind of framing on most of my images because I do t-shirt designs and plain old square images are pretty boring. I like Voldemort's Collage Fram filter because it can produce an asymmetrical edges. I don't use it as he intended, because I use solid color instead of image inputs. That produces a random jagged, but boxed like look to the edge. As I often do, I used drop shadow on the bear to make him jump away from the background a bit. I started with something random and ended up with a design. I find that is a fun way to work.

I have been trying to develop my cartooning into a more illustrative style. I am following the example of Norman Rockwell and tracing photos. This girl with the earring was taken from a catalog and I outlined it and painted it in. I used my Carved Wood Grain filter to create the stylized hair look. I used a couple of my other filters to add some fine texture. I used CFandM's Leaf Wall Paper for the background. I think he made that filter just for me. It is great. The framing was done with Sharndra's Ragged And Torn filter. Keep making those cool frame folks, I love them all.

I thought I'd show a couple of other ways I have used people's frame filters. This is one of my t-shirt designs. I used Voldemort's College Fram filter on it. I like the way it produces a very random jagged edge which is different than other filters I have seen.

Lipebinc always come up with cool filters. His Image Mask Frame produces a simple looking but unique edge effect. It helps me come up with non-boring, non-boxy, non-square shirt designs. So many fun possibilities.

Thanks Morgan …. I'm just starting to perfect this method a bit …. The actual creation is all done on my Ipad in an app called ArtStudio. It has recently been updated and has become my go-to app for drawing and painting. It has a lot of cool brushes and nice layering.

This blond lady was created on the Ipad. This app has many useful hair brushes. My wife said she has split ends, but I love the texture. Most of the main work was done on the Ipad, but I did add some background pattern in FF. The pattern is from a texture filter I have been working on. It started out as a bit of a rip-off of one of Mardar's filters, but I have been fooling around with it for awhile and I'm not sure if it is different enough to summit to the library. I used the Easy Lighting filter by Poly 77 to put some extra yellow glow on her face and hair. The frame edge was created with Voldemort's Collage Fram filter.

I thought I'd show a couple of examples of how I used my new Moody Shadows and Grain filter. I said it was a Halloween filter because it is meant to create a dark gloomy image. But there a couple of ways it can be used. Most folks in Music City call this the Batman building even if it says AT&T on top. This photo was taken from the hurricane deck of the paddle wheeler General Jackson cruising down the Cumberland river.

Heavier shadows, coarse grain which all but masks out the unwanted wires, stronger colors, and a overall smoother and illustrative look to the buildings radically changes the image. I like the fact that detail is lost but at the same time the image takes on super real look.

The effect on this image is pretty much the opposite of the last one. With the available controls you can both simplify and sharpen the image. I like the blurry/sharp look. It is surreal and just shouts Halloween to me. Look out, there are Zombies in that cornfield.

This filter is somewhat similar in idea to several of my past filters. For me, another use for the filter is to add shading and texture to my cartoons. This is my wild hair guy again. The shading around the eyes, nose, and mouth were created with the filter. The filters actually has a slider that give you some control over where the shadowing occurs. I could do shading by hand but laziness is one of the main reasons I create filters.

My last filter I uploaded to the library last week is actually similar to several others I have made in the past. “Digital Brush Impressionism” is on the surface an image art filter. As I have said before I never really try to make filters that imitate painting methods. In my experiments with image processing filters I have tried to create a computer impressionism art form. I like to think of FF as pixel paintbrush. This filters is pretty simple, but it does mess with pixels in an abstract creative way. I started with this Minnesota castle.

Early work by Van Goth and other impressionistic painters used a style where a thick base coat is applied and detail is added, causing those strokes to break up and the undercoat to show through. I love going to galleries and studying brush strokes. This filter does a similar thing with pixels. A very subtle use of bomber a combination of simplify and outline comes kinda close to that look with pixel brushes.

Another preset with the outline shut down gives a Monet like image. They say he painted blurry paintings because he could not see very well. This is how the world looked to him.

OK, we all know I do weird stuff with filters. I don't really do much trying to fake photos as art. I do love other folk's neat filters. As a background for this cool dude I used the “Art In The Round” filter by CFandM. Then I applied my filter to it to give it a nice textured look. Fun stuff for me …....
