Yep, but it still isn't finished. I need to paint that grill on the model template and do the scene in Poser instead of Bryce. I have some nice plugins for Poser that will add atmosphere to the scene, plus I can add some other things.

----Cool, well, if you remember to, please post the finished one, or you can message me a link to the pic if you'd rather not dig for this thread later on ha-ha. smile:)

I'll just keep this thread in my subscription area and then I can find it easily. It will look much better done in Poser. smile:)

HU!! smile:beer: I knew it would find an audience. smile:D

I made a mail filter of my own today so I thought I would check in on my personal favorite and sure enough it has gone HU. You must have a bazillion HUs by now. I just picked two of yours at random, well random and I thought they were cool, 'Intonation' and 'Tone Surgeon' and they were *both* HU.

I searched FF for mail, mesh and mithril and this filter did not turn up - I wish the FF search engine was more promiscuous - I think it should have caught chainmail. I only found a few mail filters with the search engine but I bet there are a ton if I knew what to search for. I hope mine will not be too similar to anyone else's. I know for certain it is entirely unlike this one. smile:)

----This was the only low usage filter that ever moved up for me that I am aware of, and it jumped from page 35 to page 9 or something one day. I have gotten 18 HU awards so far, which isn't bad of course, but I'm sure crapa and volde have gotten more, if not some others eh. smile:)

----Ha-ha, that's cool, I never really understood why you like that one so much, but it has held steady around page 25-30 for like 6 months now, so either you're still using it, or here and there someone else gets tricked into using it. smile:D

----This was one I spent a lot of time redoing, and people gave a lot of feedback and suggestions for, so they all deserve a little credit too, since they helped me make it better eh. smile:)

----I saw your new one, it's got it's own thing going on, but it seems awfully umm, *thick* overall. If you can get the chains smaller, and get some more patterns in there, you might very well have a winner. smile:)

Thanks for taking a look at it. I was thinking that the Size Pixels could be used to drive down the grid size but I don’t really understand what the size pixel thing is all about – maybe I will just bump up the repeat maximum for H and V and skip the size thingy. I found a really cool effect by adding a slider to the maximum of the gausian profile input where I get a smooth dimpled look, but here's the rub; it changes the filter so that the randomize button goes from working frequently to where it works only occasionally. It seems to me that the user needs to have something interesting to look at every two or three presses of the randomize button otherwise just abandon it entirely. What are your thoughts about that?
It’s easy to add patterns but difficult to add patterns that maintain the motif.
I will take another look at it to see if I can come up with something better.
Thanks as always for taking time to make suggestions.
smile:)

----Not sure what the rose pic has to do with this one, but yeah, the infamous Stevie_rose pic & the Stevie_cup pic have proven useful to give alternate examples, instead of always using the fugly life preserver eh. I only started using them because you had already saturated the market with them ha-ha (the rose, then later the cup), so I thought people would be used to seeing them and be more able to tell what a filter was doing used on those images than on some random one I took or had made. smile:D

----Yeah, having random produce a decent result is always a good idea. Sometimes it's just not possible, but expecting 1 in 3 to look usable is not overkill by any means, I'd say every other one ought to look at least somewhat like a preset, or else more range-limiting and/or author focus might be needed ha-ha.

----This advice kinda goes along with the above and your other concerns about changing the look too much and having random not work as well. Two words. *Mode Switch*. Putting a "Mode Switch" is an excuse to start putting all your filters into one in a way, but beware of going overboard ha-ha. I usually do it once or twice per filter, to jam in double or triple the range of possibilities, and yet still keep random from getting too wacky most of the time. Like a lot of things with FF, you have to figure out where to put the switch (or any compenent for that matter). Many is the time, that I knew what to do to make something work, but I had put the component in the wrong place, and had to go back a day or 3 later, and put it in the right place in the chain to get something to work. Look inside any of my filters, or at least any of the last 20 or so, and you will see them layed out very straight/anally rententive like, that's so I can just look at the flow better. I dunno how some people can work with crap alwaysallstackedandjammedtogether, or when people just some them of leave all over randomly and thingsarejust sometimes order outof and crowdedtoo. smile:p

I was not able to reconcile the added styles with the random option so I increased the maximum density selectable by the user on the Generate Mail texture and submitted an entirely new but similar texture called Exoskeleton that adds some variety. By taking this route I have probably doomed both to average usage but I think it will make it easier for the user. Thanks again for the suggestions. smile:)

----Ha-ha, alright, well, sometimes you hit a brickwall, and only so much can be done with one filter, at least ya tried eh, and like you said, now you've got 2 chances at an HU (well, that's not what you said, but hey, that's another way of looking at it). smile:D
