Here is the newest new one – not even in the queue yet. Hopefully this will be the last until I get the wonky math thing worked out – the math error really screws it up. I added a height slider, changed the dot blend parameters and changed the bump map. Plus it's much faster.

Since the height slider really brings out the uglyness, I have decided to ask about it in the creating filters forum. smile:|

I went over it with an eye for optimization and was able to pull out a bunch of blends. I don't know if it helped but it looks better. I decided to loose the background mode all together – it was taking about two thirds of the time. The dot blend is now even better. smile:)
The other last one still has not posted so I will post the latest one here.

Wow, that is a LOT faster. smile:D

As for the Height slider, Let the Environment settings take care of that. They have their own "Surface Height" Slider. Just remember to tell them about it in the description. smile;)

Ok, I think it's ready to go. I found the anomalous color blending Redcap pointed out, I cleaned it up like KG likes, I added tons more yin and yang as per Betis (thanks to tigerAspect) and I now refer to it as opal colored for Carl. Thanks to everyone for their feedback and assistance.
I will submit it as soon as ff begins posting again but remember that the next one that posts will be an old one. Here is the latest one. I do not plan on making anymore changes unless someone notices something wrong or has a special request. smile:)

It's a shame to have to do another update but there is no way to live with a problem like that. Sorry for all the rigmarole. I will post here when the latest version posts. Don't even bother downloading anything until I get it all sorted out. smile:|

It doesn't do the little ones any more. smile:( Too bad, I kind-of liked those. I was noticing how it does the black and white ones. I has one dot in and the other out. It was bugging me but maybe it is the most yinyangy of all.

I just noticed, that probably would look a little better if I turned down the environment saturation.
I wish the queue would clear so I can post the final. FF has not been posting very often lately - I don't know why that is. smile:(

most likely due to the mac beta stuff.

Well both of them are in actually, but you can't see the black getting blacker, so it only appears so, also, you should make the dot outlines thinner.

I just changed the point where the two bevels, outer edge of the dots and inner edge of the yy, meet. At the threshold values of 25/75 they meet in the center.

I had them set to one third/two thirds previously because with the slight overlap it made the reflection map a little less jaggy.
The last preset is my all white test image. It makes it easy to see the dot blends.

I have it set now so that at 'dot blend' zero, the dots and the yy touch and at 'dot blend' 100 they are zero.

Also, I have the environment lighting set a little high on the test image so it is difficult to tell but at zero 'dot size' the dots are spherical and at 'dot size' 100 they are completely flat.

Are you saying I should separate the dot edge bevel from the yy edge bevel? That would be easy enough to do.

Separating the dots and edge blends is excellent. I could only go as high as 16 on the center blur before getting some overlap but it really makes for some pretty yy's.
smile:)
Here is one with the dots spherical and the center line narrow:

I love the center Wide, maybe a little less than it is now, like if that was 100, I like it at 75, as for the Dot blends, about 50% or 66% spherical. Looks good, especially the Pure White and black test.

Although I have the feeling stuff is linear, the curves on some of those gradients should be circular curves, or maybe Exponential curves*.

*Plug a linear into both input of a Curve Math (Set to Multiply) and you get a x^2 curve.

I wanted to mention that I am using the multiply blend mode to derive the gradients for the dots. The two spheres on the left are multiplied then I use the contrast component to take a slice.

In that case I would do a tone curve instead of a B&C. Use the curve to define the shape and contrast of it, that way you have more control.

There is a gamma curve attached to the large sphere to control the depth but I will see what I can do with a tone curve after dinner. Thanks. smile:)

Alright, I used the last version posted, and added some stuff in, like a bevel shape selector (the stairs look cool) which was possible because of the also appended Tone Curve in place of the B&C. Feel free to Add Curves or whatever, it's your filter. smile:)

I am just showing you different ways to achieve the same effect, but in an easier or more controllable way.

Very cool! smile:D Now I see what you mean. I still want to keep the edges separate so I will apply a tone curve to them too. This will be a much better filter. smile:) Thanks again.

I played around with the tone curves and added a few curves of my own. I added a tone curve, with a variety of curves, to the center edge and I even added a tone curve to the size control. I had tone curves everywhere – spent a stupid amount of time getting everything tweaked just right. Then I started looking and it and realized I had crapped it up. smile:| So I decided to pull out everything but one gain. I think I will let someone else make the fancy yin yang.

The more I worked on it the more I realized you were right. I tried to correct it but I just made it worse. Some day I may look at it again but for now it will have to do.

smile:D If you ever decide to teach a class in filter design I will be the first to sign up. One of these days you will have to make a killer one, with all the gradients worked out and a ton of bevels.

I want to post this one. It is not an update but I noticed i Left a bunch of unused nodes in the previous one. smile:|

I was just looking - very cool how you display the results. I will study it some more, hopefully get a lot out of it. I'm something of a slow learner but I eventually get things, as long as they are not too technical smile:)

that looks good, ron.

but, i wish you wouldnt do your download link like you've been doing. it makes me think it's a page i'm going to in order to find and download the filter. instead, when i click on it, it automatically calls up FF to start running. and that's a very dangerous precedent, clicking on a link that automatically loads an .exe on my machine. very dangerous.
