I thought about that. However, most of the shading actually comes from the surface mode and ambient occlusion. Without that it would look very flat.
I realize I could probably create the same effect with some clever gradients and masks, but I like the control that the surface lighting effects give for quick tinting and shadows. (well not so quick since they are slow to render
I may try to work on some sort of Ambient occlusion faker that could use an alpha to create the same look. If I get there, then I could take out the surface node.
