Great filter, we almost gave it an Editor's Pick!

However, I remembered that some time ago I stumbled upon this:
http://flickr.com/photos/quasimondo/162017845/

Quasimondo says that the linked picture is "Made with a filter I build in Filter Forge" (emphasis mine). Flickr says the pic was uploaded on June 6, 2006.

So, I'm a little confused -- who's the author of the filter?

Weird.. I guess we both made the same filter, only Quasimondo never submitted it. My idea was triggered by some Atari sounds I once recorded. I'm familiar with Quasimondo's work. I hope I didn't subconciously rip the idea, although I can't remember ever going through his flickr pages.

----If Quasimodo never submitted his, then why not an EP anyways ?

Because you don't give someone credit for ripping off someone else's idea smile:-p
Well, I didn't though. If I had known Quasimondo had already done this I wouldn't have submitted it. Or I'd have at least asked his permission or credited him for the idea (he credits me).

I'm a bit unsure what to do with all this.

dont worry about it, sjeiti. it's actually more common than you might imagine that two peopel come up with the same idea/product/service in roughly the same time frame (yes, 2006 isnt that long ago).
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Interesting enough 3 people all stumbled upon non-euclidean geometry independent of one another roughly within the same time frame. That is HUGE, so it does happen. Sjeiti; EP or not this is an awesome filter!!! Way to keep the library fresh.

----I fail to see it that way, despite the time stamp on his version or whatever. If you didn't see it and copy it, just came up with your own and chose to submit it, then you should get that credit be it an EP or whatever. While he can keep the "I did one just like it first" credit if he wants ha-ha smile:p

Are we talking about the idea or the actual filter construction here? The 'space invaders' idea is obviously so pop culture that it cannot be attributed to either Sjeiti or Quasimondo. That leaves the filter construction, and unless it is an exact copy of Quasi's filter (quite unlikely!), I think it is clear who the author is.

Also, Sjeiti actually submitted this to the Filter Library, Quasi didn't. How can we compare filters in the Filter Library with those outside of the Filter Library (i.e. those in private libraries)? We can't! So, in my book, for the purpose of rewarding innovation and excellence among the filters of the Filter Library - Quasi's version obviously does not count.

Well, I could of course always still submit it smile;-) - but feel free to take full credit for yours - I'm sure it's pure coincidence. Though I showed mine already on several conferences in the past years, so for the record I'm probably the first to come up with the idea, I hope you can live with that.

Excellent smile:) I'd go even further -- it would be great to convince Quasi to share his version of the filter (he could just post it right here in this thread), so Sjeiti could incorporate its tricks/techniques and credit Quasi for that smile;)

But why would I want to do that? I took a good look after you posted the link to that picture and the two filters are definitely different. Quasimondo's invaders appear to be 12x12 tiles with the invaders taking up 10x10 (if could be wrong with all the antialiasing). Whereas I tried to match the original invaders as much as possible: 16x16 tiles with 7x8 invaders. Mind you that this is a quite simple filter, changing a small portion would change the result lot.
If this is a question of giving me an EP or not, I don't really care for that. I'd rather have Quasimondo submitted his version for EP.

I know from my own experience that even though you may build a filter first, if you don't submit it to public scrutiny it doesn't really exist. So, though I've had a few "doh, I did that filter a year ago!" moments when I see someone else's work online, I always follow it up with. "well, perhaps you should have posted yours you dope"

smile:)

Both filters are glorious and everyone should share a big filter forge group hug.
