this one is based on my 'perfect arc' snippet. you might want to wait to download it since i've just now submitted an update adding a blur and noise distortion for extra effects.

Cool, another simple idea that got overlooked for a long time huh. I bet this one goes HU in no time with 8,000,000 bucktoothed grandkids inserted standing under the rainbow eh. smile:p

Craig, I took a good look at this one.....and have some constructive suggestions.....

1) Loose the "distortion" control.....no applications for it.....and rainbows don't bend like that unless you have beer goggles on..... smile;) smile:) LOL....

2) Loose the "offset left-right" control.....no use for showing an ubrupt "bounce" in it......and screws up good randomization of the single clean arcs that I think most all users will be looking for from this.....

3) Add controls to do faded ends.....like in the rainbow sample pics I posted.....

4) Splice in my "ParticleDiffuser" filter and limit parameters to fine particle diffusion.....which will give you the photo-realistic color blends and fades working with opacity.....

5) Add optional solid color backgrounds.....which alot of users will want so they can just add text in the open areas.....like for cards, posters, signs, etc.....

6) Break it up into two filters.....one photo-realistic version like for use with your clouds.....and another posterized/solid version for use in things like cards, poster, signs, etc.....

Hope this helps!!! smile:)

ah, good suggestions. dont know about the diffuse, fading ends. i can see the need but not the way to do it right off hand. maybe a prof grad or two with an impulse curve. good idea, though.

i'll have to have a look at your particle diffuser.

yeah, i debated the left right control. i left it in on purpose for a few odd applications. on randomizing it can be a pain, but i tend to grant that users are smarter than some give them credit for and can figure out things like this themselves.

solid backgrounds is ok, but hardly necessary given photoshop layers. in fact, i believe it better to leave it transparent so that one can quickly change backgrounds in photoshop without having to re-render in FF. so, probably wont add that one, though, probably wouldnt hurt either.

and no, i wont break it up into two filters. you can simply turn down the opacity for the semi-solids and turn it up for solids. to do two filters just to separate those out would diffuse use on both.

the distortion control you're mostly right about. dont see a need that often for soemthing like that in a rainbow. i put it there for high refractive looks, like in my waterfall filter, where water or other media would affect the light transmission. granted, it's not very realisitic as is, so i might take that one out or modify it, or maybe just put some re-mapping on it to limit it more. i'll definitely look at it again, though.

thanks, steve. comments like this are always helpful!

ok, i've just revised this again, though not submitted yet. i stripped out all the previous masking. it's not needed with the added any angle rotate and zooom. i've also stripped out some other redundancies and streamlined the entire thing. AND, i've added fading ends and control of the length of the overall! the only limit with the fading ends is that both ends have to fade out and not just one or the other, but that might be do-able also. i am leaving the distortion in. it's aleady re-mapped to keep it from going nuts, but i do find it useful, especially for reflections and such. so, that stays. but, i did take out the left-right control. easy enough to add back later if needed and didnt really seem necessary here. i also renamed a number of controls for better understanding.

on that last picture, i saved it as a jpg so you dont really see the full effect. those ends are actually translucent in the filter and fade out more. here, they're just showing as dimmed.

ok, just checked something and had to add the left-right back in. when the rainbow is shortened, you do need control in positioning it within the boundaries.

here we go. i cut the diffuser down quite a bit, steve, mostly for speed and because some of the effects had very little impact on the rainbow. so, i just simplified it a bit. worked pretty well, though smile:)

On the "ParticleDiffuser".....I would suggest just using it with the "particle" control hardwired on max.....and no streaking. I think just using the diffusion of uniformly spread particles in combination with opacity will give you the realistic color blend and edge fade that you see with real rainbows..... smile:devil:

I'm suggesting this more for photo-realistic use with your clouds..... smile:devil:

I Definitely think it's on the right track towards photo-realistic.....but I would suggest turning down the particles just a "tad" so they are a little more subtle.....or maybe running a little blur on it after the particles.....

Do you like this direction???

it has a little blur on it, though, yes, the particle count was set high.

and re the direction, i'm sidelining the whole thing for now due to other factors going on right now. why dont you pick it up and have a go at it?

I think this filter is a great idea and alot of people are going to use it.....but I personally don't have any uses for it in my work.....

I would be glad to help you out with your cloud filter if you want to send it over to me via email......because I do have uses for that one.....and I'm intrigued by what you have so far and the possibilities of where it could go..... smile:devil:

Wow, I really like the clouds & rainbow picture. Totally awesome.

One small suggestion on that; perhaps setting it to 'overlay' or 'screen' would give the 'light bouncing' look, rather than the painted rainbow look.

steve, sorry, but the clouds stay here for now smile;) but, i am posting the combo filter here for anyone to play with, rainbow and diffuser.

hi mouse smile:) and thanks smile:) yeah, a blend mode might do it. bear in mind that that last picture of the rainbow was pasted onto the clouds. that wasnt all done in a filter... yet smile:)

and steve, maybe you can find a better diffuse effect in your filter to use. i just picked one at random.

Right click on the link and select "save target as" ("save link as" in firefox). Then double-click the saved file and it should automatically be copied to your FF library.

you can also just 'save target as' straight to your 'my filters' folder. i havent been able to click on anyone's posted filter here in the forums without getting the script page instead of it opening FF and running like it used to.
