I'm trying to create this pattern:
And am having no luck. Anybody have any ideas how I can isolate hexagons in groups of 3?

In essence, you need to create the following pattern and repeat it as tiles:
Then you can make your pattern lines with an elevation gradient.

The above pattern is horizontally symmetrical, so you really just need one half of it and mirror the other half.

ThreeDee did you create that in FF? How did you get an equilateral hexagon to tile in FF?

No, I didn't. In FF I would probably approach it with mirrored profile gradients in 0, 60 and 120 degree angles and some rather complicated masking. When I look at that pattern, I see gradients in 6 directions or mirrored gradients in 3 directions and a whole lot of masking. Then you should be able to repeat it with an Integer Slider control that changes the Repeat factor of the gradients (and masks). Theoretically, that is.
In order to tile the pattern seamlessly, you will have to fit something like 4 horizontally and 5 vertically into a square area. (Unless you make your original image the same proportions as a single tile.)

Yeah multiple gradients masked together was my latest (failed) attempt... complex arrangement/assembly has never been my FF strong suit. I ended up just creating the pattern "by hand" in Photoshop.
